Default Questions on 2005 Issues and Reliability

Greetings

Considering purchasing a 2005 and after researching this am trying to determine whether there are any problems specific to this model year. I understand that the 03's and 04's did have some issues and that a lot of these were corrected by 05.

Also, how are these performing now that they are 6 years old? Are any new gremlins being discovered?

Presently there are 2 I am looking at - the V6 with 80 000 miles and an S with 60 000 miles. I don't desire the V8, but if it is a better engine I would consider it (altho it would be out of place with my current fleet of 6 cylinder cars).

Thanks

jb

You are right about many problems being fixed on the later generation I cars. The V8' do have the problem with the plastic cooling pipes cracking so you should check to see if they have been replaced (newer design aluminum ones). One thing you do usually get when moving up from a V6 to V8 or V8 to a Turbo is more than just the engine, you usually get a few more standard equipment items.

When looking for mine I test drove the 6 and for us (specialy me) was a no go. The 8s and Turbos are totally total monsters. Our CTT came with all the bells and whistles you can imagine. I know its not an 05 but the common issues to look at are coolant pipes, Cardan shaft, coil packs...

I have an 05 V6 that I bought with 80+ on the clock. No issues so far, not missing the V8.

Thanks for the replies so far. One other bit of information is that they are listed at the same price. Would the V8 with 20000 less miles be a big difference?

Like I said, I prefer the 6 as I have absolutely no use for the 8, but if one engine has proven to be more durable / reliable than the other then that would be a much bigger plus.

I had a Base V6 3.2 2005, great car. I do think the early (2003-2006) V6 base is a little sluggish.

Based on this forum and not on personal experience: the V6 has fewer issues than the V8, mainly due to the coolant tubes problem.

I've found that the V6 is a lot quicker off the line if you thumb the transmission to 'M1' instead of 'D2' on launch. I test drove a CS prior to buying my V6 and I didn't think the CS was quick off the line either.

I am at a bit of a loss. Same year but the v8 has 20k less miles and you are wondering which to buy? If that is correct there is no question the S is by far and away the best of the 2. Test drive them both but unless the S is tattered inside I guarantee you you will get the S. There is a button on the dash called PSM. Press it and flog her. Drive it like you drive your 911 in your signature and you will be shocked at how it drives. Good luck. Btw fuel economy difference is almost non existent but both the V6 and S like to drink lots of premium.

We just rolled 82,000 miles on our 2004 S. Aside from standard maintenance and replacement of coils, it has been a great car with very little maintenance.

Thanks for all the replies. As it turns out the S sold before I had a chance to get to the city to check it out. Did speak with the dealer who stated that it had some historic accident damage to the tune of roughly $3500 (it had been repaired).

Kinda disappointed as it would have been nice to check it out. Oh well, still get to keep on searching which for me is most of the fun!!
