Do Radar Detectors Really Work for you?
I have not had one since the 80s when I threw my passport (or escort..can't remember for sure) out the window after getting a speeding ticket.
I have read a bunch of threads on V1 vs k40, etc...but honestly do they really work? Have they really saved you from getting tickets or driven you mad with all the false alarms?
I do find myself in traffic court at least 2 times per year so clearly I need help.
I am considering the K40 with the fancy, stealthy install but it's about $2k and that's a lot of coin!

They work best with a "cagey" driver
My V1 has saved me innumerable times, but you cannot rely just on radar - you have to rely on your "sixth sense" radar as well. With instant on and laser radar, the cops have some real advantages.
The V1 is by far and away the most interactive radar detector with an aware driver - when you learn to interpret all of it's signals, you realize it is a great help.
But it is only a help. The K40 system that I have in my turbo is helpful but not at the same level as the V1.
Watch out for the laser cops on Rt 78

There's a great link to a cop forum over on the 997 board. Makes for some interesting reading, it also validates my decision to go with a concealed RD (K40) next time.

i agree with most everyone else-the valentine 1 is the best. i have used it for 4-5 years in various cars-it has saved me umpteen times. with laser though, you are screwed-it will show you when they have you on their laser, which is too late for you. the state troopers tend to use laser-everyone else tends to use radar. i agree about that sixth sense-crazy driving will get you caught every day. you tend to slow down when you are coming around bends in the highway where it makes sense for there to be a police car hiding. another place to be careful are the 25 mph posted areas on main roads. my advice-save your money on the expensive k-40. get the v-1 and use it as the useful tool that it is.

Definitely V1. There are a few other basic rules, like if speeding up a hill, slow down before you crest to see if there is instant-on on the other side. Big, blind sweeping curves on the interstate, especially if ther is an underpass or a split seam in the center divider are another area.
Once you identify the hiding spots in your area, you know hwere you need to be more cautious.
All of my recent speeding tickets are in my wife's cars, not in any of my 3 V1 equipped cars ( I leave them permanently installed with the remote display just on top of the steering collumn. I just bought my 4th V1 to keep uninstalled for use when I take another car (we have a bunch).
The ticket is a stupid waste of cash, the V1 is not. AS

Truth be told never owned one and in all my 25 years of driving cars and motorcycles never got a single ticket speeding, parking or otherwise. Just lucky I guess but than again I dont go speeding all over the place

My opinion....placing the 80's-styled V1 in the refined, classy interior of our 140K Turbos is akin to wearing a pocket protector on your tux. Functional, but very tacky.
The V1 is technologically superior, but it is such an eye-sore I have opted to go with the K40.
