997.1 Engine Drop - big list of To Do's
#331
Thank you. My weakness is documenting process and organizing screws/parts. It's bit me before when I hurry through steps I think are common sense when I'm doing it only to end up with an extra screw or something at the end. I plan on over doing the documentation and organization for this.
Off hand do you recall needing any specialty tools for the engine drop or disassembly? I have e torx, torx, deep sockets, shallow sockets, etc. I only have one wobble extension tough and I recall reading that they're needed though I didn't see a length,

There is a picture somewhere up in the thread of every tool I used. I've attached it here. The only item I had to buy new was deep sockets, though I had a pretty good collection before I started. Torque wrenches are important, and things like a ball joint separator help avoid damage. It looks like I only used the medium-length wobble socket extender. The only obvious tools I do not see in the picture are the tap and drill/bit I used to secure the coolant fittings. If you see anything in the pic you can't ID, let me know.
I would also suggest getting this book for the torque specs:

There were some things I was doing beyond the WS manuals where the book was easier to find Torque Specs, due to the functional layout. You may not need it, but it is nice to have.

I ended up ordering it and it will come in a few days. I'm hoping to start work tomorrow morning and get a few hours in here and there during the week. Do you have the dimensions for the 4x4 blocks you need to place under the engine for support? I was looking for atcbi5's post on it and when I click on the profile it only goes back to 2018 which isn't far enough.
Disregard the blocks. Found yours on it.

Yes,, PS pump comes off and the ac compressor can be set aside without disconnecting the lines.
I did this on my 996tt, but it should be the same for your 997tt. Here's a link to a video of it

For the life of me I cannot get the cv axle out. I’m following the steps in the WM to a T but am wondering if I’m missing something. Is there a snap ring buried in there that I missed? My hub puller doesn’t grab well but ive also tried with an air hammer and heating with map gas to no avail

Show us a picture. So you have removed the inward CV bolts that hold the CV to the transmission flange?
Have you removed the tire and 36 mm nut so you can drive the out of the hub?

Spray penetrant on the splines.. Thread the nut back on a bit and get the bigger hammer out. Spray and soak it some more.. Rinse/repeat.
FYI the nuts are one time use only per the manual.

I’ve been dousing with WD-40 but should probably try another brand at this point. Do I run the risk of damaging the threads using a hammer on the nut? I’ve tried similar with a hardwood block without the nut but haven’t gone super hard at it yet.

Yes get better penetrant.. Screw the nut back and leave 1/8" margin/air gap. Hammer until you see the gap close. Unscrew a few turns and repeat. You can then unscrew the nut and use a hardwood block.
