4.0's tracked and white with the wrong options can be had for 275k - 300K, I think.
Don't get hung up on the zero mile non white 4.0 prices.
Most are white, most are tracked, most have the wrong options.
So we are talking 2x 3.8RS not, 3,4,5x.
Its not OMG difference, I think from what I hear and see dyno numbers the 4.1Sharky is OMG compared to a 3.8RS. Don't know the Sharky price but I think that's a nice 75K savings for more performance.
Blindfolded I could not tell I was driving the 4.0, except I liked suspension better for the track in 3.8RS.
But maybe I never got the setup right with the different spring rates, shocks, LSD, rake and alignment? 4.0 for sure better on the street.
Lapping at Sebring back to back, when I got back in my old 3.8RS that I had driven hard as well, I DID really miss the giddyup from the 4.0 out of the corners. The 4.0 motor is sweeter, revs better, more linear and more torque for sure.
You need to drive both hard back to back to feel the difference. For the less experienced track guys I think it would make even less difference in lap time and would not be noticeable VS more advanced track junkies.
For me the extra's of the 4.0 justified the $45-50K it added to the MSRP base price of the 3.8RS. My delta was about $60K to the very nice 3.8RS I sold and that was a lot, but it was worth it to me.
Any more than that and I would take the 3.8RS because 1. less money at risk on track 2. its a lot of money form me 3. difference is not big enough. We're talking Ruf money now for a 4.0. I'll take the Ruf.
For some the 4.0 is the only original Porsche to have and collect and for many 100-200K more or less is a blip on the radar.
I would not buy a GT3 because the delta is so small that I will take the RS for 30K more, for some $300K is less than my $30K, so to those buyers its worth it and they are not wrong. Don't ball it up and it is investment grade..
I don't want investment, I want a car that I can beat to death under warranty. After 7000 track miles I sold it. Even the 3.8RS is too much for me know so I bought old beater and will take a brake from GT3 until we see what new RS will be. First in line but we'll see.

I wonder if the rally guys like Olaf Dobberkau are gonna switch to the 991 GT3 once they're re-engined? Good way to test them

I assume the added wheel base and rear wheel steer might not be what these guys are looking for.....
Some rally guys have gone to Cup cars...

I owned a 3.8RS for about 16 months and loved it. Sold it when I was able to score a 4.O RS in late 2011 at msrp. Sweated over the decision about whether the price delta was worth it. But immediately was shocked at how much harder the 4.0 pulled. The midrange torque punch is incredibly immediate and so much more than the 3.8 was. It is also even better dialed in with regards to handling. To me it is much more exhilarating than the 3.8 was. Bigger difference between the 4.0 and 3.8 RS than was between the 3.8RS and the 3.6 non RS GT3 that I had before. It's hard to put a relative value on something so special to enthusiast nuts like us. It is the same with everything that that people love. The rare great ones command a premium.

4.0>3.8 = absolutely, but is it worth 2-3x? Subjective.
There's an absolute tie between the 4.0 and 3.8, however. Meanwhile everyone with a stake in the game, meaning having bought and chosen one or the other for whatever reasons will continue to rationalize their decisions already made.

The bubble will POP soon after that last engine gets replaced and production starts back up again.
Whoops, sorry did more reading and at this time the 4.1 mod is only available for the 997.2 3s!

The best part of the GT3 platform is that its so modular.
You can build an RS 4.0, using OEM RS 4.0 parts, for a lot cheaper than you can buy one. (But you'll never get your money back at resale....oh no....the inhumanity! )
In my honest opinion, I think the RS 4.0 was worth the MSRP. The huge increase in price is due to it's collectibility - something that I personally would never pay a premium for.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Its collectibility is the worst thing that ever happened to the RS 4.0. Now only a small percentage of cars will be used, many will be garage queens, and some even bubble wrapped. This is not the reason why these cars exist.

How much does a 4.0 engine cost?
#193
For the $100k difference there are many (many) interesting cars you can get that are investment grade. Old longhood 911s for example.
or if you want something really extraordinary...c7 z06 will be less than $100k.

I thought about this a bit more.
If I were in the market to buy a $400k Porsche I would do the following:
1) Hire a broker to locate a 73RS that needs restored. $200k.
2) Take the next 2 years having it restored. $150k.
Result: Appreciating asset, best Porsche ever made...
