Got some bad news. Working with CRex on the install on his 3.8L and the damper doesn't clear the lower water pump assembly... Sigh... We didn't have a .2 to check everything and when I discussed with local techs and the dealership they all said the clearances were the same as the .1... Guess what they're not...

So, I'm going back to ATI to see what we can do to get the housing about .3-.4" smaller than it is now...

I'm really sorry to all the .2 guys. We'll iterate and bring out the next one...

Still fits like a glove for all the 3.6L and bigger engines based on the 3.6L...

Thanks

Jamie go to see you're on top of things.
I fully trust you'll address and resolve all issues with ATI.
Keep up the good work.

With CRex's patience and help I'm on top of things...

Your damper should be with Jerome by now... Thanks for the support!

Jamie's been absolutely forthcoming during this whole episode and made it stress-free. Apparently PAG had a completely redesigned water cooling housing in the 3.8 engines. As a result the clearance from housing to crank center has been reduced by as much as 0.4".

This is a developmental project and inherently comes with a degree of uncertainty. I've just sent measurements to Jamie and I'll be in line when his new damper comes out.

Sorry for the newbie questions:

1. Would there be any difference in how the engine feels with the dampener on? The 3.6 has always had a pretty rough spot around 3,000-3,200 rpm. Does it eliminate that?

2. Are there any downsides to this? How much weight does it add? Does this rotate at crank speed?

3. Does it make a difference if you have dual-mass flywheel or single? Do you need a different dampener for different flywheels?

I'd love to smoothen out some of the irritating vibrations in my 997.1 especially when cruising on the highway at 3,200 rpm and the door panels are all vibrating away, and the rear view mirror is all blurry.

Not sure, could be lots of things causing the vibration and if you can feel the torsional vibration in your door panels, I fear it would have broken something by now. It may help, as this is in the targeted area for harmonic dampening.

Not really any downsides, it will make the crank accelerate slightly slower due to a bit more mass on it but unlikely you will be able to tell. It adds about 4-5lbs and it rotates at crank speeds

A dual mass flywheel acts as a damper it's just on the wrong side of the crank to be as effective as it could be. If you have a dual mass you will get a little benefit, if you have a single mass you will get more benefit as the crank isn't damped at all... Don't need a different damper

Hope this helps!

Thanks Jamie. The door panel buzzing at ~3,000rpm has been there since new and is the same on other .1's that I've driven. My car now has 44,000 km so I've concluded it's just inherent in these cars. I'm very sensitive to these things so it not be a big deal or noticeable to others.

I'll have to check mine when I drive it next. Haven't noticed vibration with the dampened 4.2 in it, but lots of other stuff on my mind lately (tuning) so didn't pay attention. I have some in stock if you end up wanting to try it...

Glove box rattles. Rear window squeaking. Buzzing. Sounds like any of the old OLD Porsches I owned. Brings back fond memories.
Frankly I'd rather have a squeaker that I knew was supposed to squeak vs. a touring car that I KNOW isn't supposed to make noises.
You can pull your hair out taking those back and forth to the dealer. (and it will never do it in their hands)

Forget that.
