For an open trailer stick to Gas PU either Ford or Chevy with Tow package. I dont have faith in the long term reliability of the Diesel SUV's. IMHO YMMV Now that is based on my history of towing upwards of 20k miles a year. If you only occasionally tow then the Diesel SUV would be fine. Also the longer the WB the better the tow.
Yep tires in the rack cost me 1 to 2 mpg from wind resistance.

BMWs.... I was always a die hard fan of BMW, but after my few last experiences, I moved to MB, and never looked back, just a matter of opinion, and not willing to give my money to them anymore. To be honest, is more of a after sales and dealer problem than the brand itself.

Love forced induction... Wife's DD is also a '11 Touareg TDI. My DD is an older 2005 E55 AMG. As is my 1994 GT-R and GT2. My two other cars aren't really DD'able, and they also aren't forced induction...

The best open trailer (CT8045 or 3110) tow vehicle is a Cayenne V8 Twin Turbo.
2006 or newer, deeply depreciated. Mid $20k to Mid $30k depending on mileage. Buy one with an extended warranty, and trade it in every two years. Get the one with the tow package, it includes the transmission cooler.
Standard Features:
- Full Leather interior (dashboard, all consoles, everything you touch is leather)
- Full Alcantara roof liner
- Air suspension like a PeterBuilt semi
- Handling like a sport sedan
- Full Time 4WD
- Massive brakes, 350mm rotors front and rear with 6-piston front calipers
- Porsche V8 Twin Turbo, 450HP at 6,000rpm
- Massive Torque (beats the Diesel SUVs out there): 460 ft-lbs at a low 2,250 rpm just above idle
- Navi
- Bose serious sound system
- Beats my Cayman S on a drag race
- Track capable if your track day car fails you
- So much torque that it only needs 3 gears, but it comes with 6 gears (08+ have 8-speed transmissions)
- Reliable and Dependable
- Fun to drive, not like regular boring SUV
- Pagid RS29 available
- 5 different ride heights with a center console switch
- 3 suspension settings: Comfort (like a Cadillac), Normal (like the X5), and Sport (like a Cayenne Turbo)
- Low Range for off-road trips
- 7,700 lbs tow rating
The Cayenne Turbo tows better than a Cayenne/X5/Touareg/Q7 Diesel. My next tow vehicle is another Cayenne Turbo, probably a 2008 Turbo S once they touch under $45k.

Open trailers are great, but sometimes you don't want to unpack everything all the time when you get back home late at night, or if you have another event the next week.
Also sucks when you clean the car, and then drive to the track in the rain for an hour or two with an open trailer.
I also like the fact that not everyone knows what's on/in the trailer.

Get the Trailex enclosed and save a step. Touareg diesel will pull it fine, it has 7500lbs capacity. This way you'll get most of the benefits of a full-size enclosed, with a light weight trailer.... which can also be sold for the price you paid if you need to.

If you are using a suv you will pretty much need a trailex enclosed, and they are very expensive and small. I want an enclosed for many reasons, but the biggest are more space for all my **** and the ability to leave said **** in trailer btwn events. I am soooo sick of loading/unloading all my gear every time I head out for an event - it gets so exhausting.
With trailex you will have barely most space than an open.

I'm DRL, the enclosed trailers are just so much more convenient, but I can't justify 7K for an open trailer.
Just got a steel trailer with winch, tool box, and a few more other stuff for 2K.
Get a 2500 truck that you can still use as a DD and a enclosed one, with room, A/C, generator, TV, fridge and be happy.
