but, data + talent = excellence.
data is important when you go to other tracks and it makes the learning curve faster.
it's just fine-tuning.

 

Oh I totally agree...not saying studying the squiggly lines is not good...sure has helped me out. I guess I might not have worded my post the best way...trying to say that study the lines, know where to improve, stay smooth with your driving but don't forget about the feel and hone YOUR driving style. What works for 1 guy may not work for the other guy.

 

I have worked with a few engineers and other highly trained analytical folks who have become overwhelmed with it, but IMO, this is due to an unorganized approach without proper prioritization or discipline in that approach.

For me, it's very clear that the path to driving success is proper execution of fundamental skills. No one does that as well as they should or could.

The data shows that, and allows low-hanging fruit to be harvested. The fruit haul may get smaller and smaller as the driver gets quicker and quicker, but it's ALWAYS there.

Me? When I drive, I visualize what my data will look like, and it helps keep me focused and executing properly.

What happens with me and my clients is when there's good data, I say "make it feel like THAT!"

Way more positives than negatives with the introduction of video and data...

 

To me the most important part of retaining data is remembering what that fastest speed in the corner felt like. That's why I have to get to the data the day of or at least within a couple of days.. Otherwise some of the sensations used to remember can get lost if you cant remember which feel was the fastest or which session it came from. Sometimes you can feel like you were flying through a turn and you just went in hot and were on the edge too early. Some times slow in fast out works. Sometimes the trail brake feel works. I try new stuff all the time so that feel is vital.

 

Part of the fun is car preparation before the event, a few days before the event.

Part of the fun is video posting and data analysis after the event, a few days after the event.

In between these two, there is the event, and you get 2 hours of driving if lucky. So, part of the fun is to chat, eat, drink, joke with friends the other 22 hours during the event.
