Porsche plans to launch Cayman R and GT3...

"In the past, the Cayman wasn't allowed to outperform the more profitable 911, but this policy is about to change. Since Porsche has learned that there is virtually no overlap between the two clienteles, we are almost certainly going to see another Cayman R, and there's even talk of a GT3 variant, which could compete in its own junior racing series.

At the other end of the scale, the midcycle makeover expected for late 2015 may yield a new entry-level Cayman powered by a more frugal turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine. Also said to be in the works are a seven-speed manual gearbox and a wider choice of operating modes modeled after BMW's driving-experience selector and Ferrari's manettino."

That sucks for vette folks. I used to be a stick guy until one day I got rear ended waiting at the red light and now have non stop pain from spine issues and surgery couldn't fix it so I love pdk. I can't imagine not having any car without a dual clutch transmission.

By the way, in another forum somebody posted this today:

"Hi
.. I am an Italian Gt3 owner .. I was looking for some
news regarding the new 991 Gt3 and here are the results:
3800 cc- 450 hp
only and this is for sure, PDK. No manual available!
the body will be the larger one (4S)
it will be available as an option, the steerable rear wheels..
starting price : from 145.000 euro (including 21% tax. Mine 26 months
old, was starting by around 119.000 euro. Basic)

It should be introduced on the next Geneve motorshow (March as you know)"

So you see I didnt invent the 145,000€..for which I got hammered here..in a few weeks we will know whether my predition was correct.

I'm not clear from the wording of the post; is he saying the 145,000E includes the 21% VAT, or that his car at 119,000E included 21% VAT? If the former, you did previously say that the price would be 145,000E, but didn't specify that that price would include VAT. Before VAT, base price would be 119,800E on a 145,000E car.

I think that VAT confusion, and the fact that US prices are certain to be less, is why you had some folks disagree with your pricing estimate.

Hi Bmardini,

Yes, prices are with VAT..however the one with 119,000€ for 997.2GT3 was also including VAT. So you so the price increase is quite heavy. Anyway, we will know more soon.

The price of 145K€ doesnt surprise me..if you take a 991S, + power kit + PCCB + PDCC + a few other things..you also end at 145K€.

regards,

Could it be that the engineers have been a bit busy lately with 918 and whatnot and developing the GT3 Cup and the choice was made to put the tried and true Mezger in the Cup so that not everything needed to be worked on at once, and a race version of the 9A1 is forthcoming?

About a year ago, I read an article that indicated that Porsche might position the engine a little further forward in the 991 GT3 than in previous GT3 models. The explanation was that since the GT3 has no rear seats, it does not require the engine to be as far back as other 911 models. And, moving the engine forward, even an inch or two, would improve the weigh balance of the car.

Has anyone here heard anything about this topic, or have an opinion as to whether Porsche might do such a thing?

Since the gearbox is connected to the motor, it would also be moved forward. Wouldn't this cause some odd geometry of the driveshafts to the rear wheels?

I think this has already been done. Last year, an engineer showed me how the axles on his Cup car had been moved aft by a clever redesign of the transmission housing. I wonder if we are talking about the same thing.
