Default Dan Wheldon ... RIP

If you have not heard. Dan Wheldon, the Indi 500 winner had a fatal crash at LV race today. What a sad day for the racing community. I have to say this ... stop racing the dangerous oval. It is accident waiting to happen traveling at 220 mph all the time in a pack. Road race like F-1 is more suitable for open wheel race car ... and safer in many aspect.

Rip. Wish it's easy to say that it's going at those speeds that u likely die if it happens but it could happen to neone on track at lesser speeds. Sad. Condolescenses to the family. Mike

Just heard of this! Not an Indy fan but I am a F1 fan. My heart goes out to his family and the racing community as a whole. A very sad day!

Horrific crash. The in-car videos made it look like a war scene.

Dan Wheldon RIP!

I agree with the statement above. Running constantly around 200MPH next to concrete walls makes no sense. I guess it mimics interstate driving. Backroad driving with twisties and turns, ups and downs, fast and slow is a lot more fun and safer and F1, ALMS, Grand-Am proves that.

That is a horrific crash, makes me want to cry watching it back again.

RIP Dan, he was a great guy and leaves his wife and two young children. Sad sad day.

wasn't this race supposed to be 200 laps?
even in a tin-top, the oval is frightening. it's sorta pointless, like it's designed in roman times to be a battle with the last man standing, as the winner. where is the technique? is it just a matter of survival?

dan was due to share a v8 supercar drive with reigning champ, james courtney, in aus in the coming weeks. RIP

Can't sleep last night .. the accident really distrubed me. It is really irresponsible for the organizer to run race like this. No consideration for driver safey. In a road course, you have flag stations everywhere to warn you if something goes wrong and usually you can see it a mile away. Cars are so spread out even if there is a crash like when Weber airborn on the video below all the cars behind have plenty of chance to slow down. In an oval going 200+ mph three to four wide and touch someone else's wheel then you are done ... along with 5-6 cars behind you. At one time during Dan's crash three cars went airborn in the same time!? There is just no excuse to run these kind of format.

Yeah, this one really bugged me and my wife also. Very sad. I tuned in and everyone was just sitting around...some crying. Racing is the real deal in any format. I hit a tire wall last year with the pinata at RA...happened so fast I didn't have time to brake. All I had was a bruised shoulder from the harness. It's amazing how well protected we are, but certainly not invincible. Blessings to his family. He will be sorely missed. But, I concur, bad format for this race at such high speeds.
