Ah the beauty of living in winter-land, there's just no rush to get anything, including tires, in a hurry. Lotttts-o-time.

Saw this post here lurking to learn about the 7 GT2. Just an FYI, R888's come with a big consumer alert tag on them. If they are exposed to freezing temperatures at any time they can DELAMINATE while you're driving on them. I had to toss two good sets out after reading that. No way I'm taking a chance on a tire failing at 150+ mph. :P

If John doesn't Appalachian Race Tire did as of a few days ago, Rodney has never let me down with accurate shaving as well, plus his shipping prices are tough to beat.

Unshaved RA1's and R888's are a waste of time and money. They're scary under braking, snap spin if pushed hard and your lap times will be >1 sec slower than usual. They're a waste of money because you pay $300 for a track day and spend the day alternating between tip-toeing around and spinning. I'll never use an unshaved Toyo tire again!

Actually unshaved R888's are not bad at all...compared to unshaved RA1's. I feel that R888's when new to mid-life are stickier than RA1's. The RA1's seem to stay sticky almost to the cords.

Hi guys,
I understand the reasons why you are moving from 19" to 18" tyres

but why are you using wider tyres either front (245 or 255) and rear (315 or 335) against standard recommended dimension (235 f - 305 r) ??...

Are you not finding you loose too much speed against a small extra-grip benefit ??
Thanks for answers.

If you want to use 18's for the track and you want to maintain the same overall diameter as stock 19's...you need 245/40/18 and 305/35/18....for 997 version cars...yes the fronts are a little wider that stock...but not much and it helps at the track.

Others will use 255/35/18 and 315/30/18...maintains same front to rear diameter ratio though s ABS doesn't freak out...this sizing is smaller than overall 19" diameter but the thought or therory is that this essentially lowers the car some, gears it down some for better acelleration and the sidewall is the same size as stock 19's so you will have less side wall movement and the stock shocks package is tuned for this shorter sidewall...plus yes they are wider thus putting more rubber to the ground.

which is better on a 997 car? who really knows...there is no back to back testing that's ever been published so as of right now this is personal preference.

I am seeing more and more new 997.2 GT3 and GT3RS going to the track with stock 19" sizes...and some claim that the shock/suspension package is tuned for 19" wheels/tires....

I wish I had a definate answer and same day test data to comfirm which is really better...stock 19's or 18's in the 2 different sizes.

I'm still running 19's with the Toyo's, but would prefer 18's for the variety of tire choices and less cost.
