well, here is my opinion.
i HATE short shifters.
i had BM, POS
i had many other short shifter on many different cars, never had one i liked.
i actually really really like the 996gt3 and 997gt3 oem shifter....
but my lastest 996gt3 came with POS BM shfter so i had to change it.
so, decided to try cup cable and shifter.
now that i have had it for 2 months, i just drove a stock 996gt3 today.
i can't describe it. but LIMP comes to mind. yes, THAT kind of LIMP.
once you tried the cup shifter, you cannot possibly drive oem 6gt3 shifter.

7 gt3 shifter is still ok.
may not be woody, but it's not quite as LIMP.

Thanks 911 SLOW for the info but i think i will just go with the cables because i love the short throw of the 997 GT shifter, I will give my feedback after i install them with the clutch/lwfw.

Thanks again for the info

Guys I need to open this thread up again for a question: Would the noise/vibrations from swapping to the cup car cables be to much to deal with in a street car? I am at my wits end with the stock GT3 shifting even on the street especially 2nd to 3rd...I do however prefer the shorter throw and the Cup car Shifter would probably be longer throws and over kill for a street car...I already get some noise from the LWFW at idle do you think this would drown out the cable vibrations?

and FYI...the Porsche SSK option is not the answer on a GT3

^ do it - IMHO it is so much better with cup cables and the noise is negligible

Yes if you have LWFW rattling noise will go up, and will go louder when hot.

Put a Cup cable in my 10 RS. Feels great, noise is no big deal. Yet another piece of the long list customers have to update because Porsche thinks feeding the marketing machine is more important than updated engineering

Savy: Mind elaborating on "feels great" comment? I think the RS box feels pretty good but I did notice last few track days that I was having occassional issues with 2-3 shift, sometimes in situations where it didn't feel like hurrying the shift and not in a turn.

RS OE does feel great. When new. And off track. But during a track session, some people experience a difficult if not impossible 2->3 shift at times. I think mine got worse with more miles. Recently I also began to have 3->2 issues. Just would not go.

It is the cable, not the tranny.

Popped in a Cup cable and feel was vastly improved. The old "rifle bolt" feel like when new, but even better. Not track tested yet, but around town it is awesome.

Cup cable is thicker, heavier cables, tranny ends are solid with no elastomers, and shifter end connections can now be metal instead of plastics.

It is a bitch of a job (first time is six-seven hours, I could do one now in three I think) to replace but worth it I think.

996 Cup cable, part numbers per 911SLOW's thread. And I posted some pics of my install over there too.

I had the CMS billet shifter in for a bit but it needs perfecting by the manufacturer (who was really great to work with), so I took that back out. The stock shifter itself is actually a nice, precise, light unit.

The CMS shifter is a work of art and ultra precise with no play anywhere. Roger at CMS is a smart guy and superb with customer service.

However on mine, the shift lever was offset toward passenger side by about 30 degrees vs OE (neutral vs neutral). 5th/6th was way over on the right. Also the driver's side cable was not angled into the housing as the OE one is and resulted in binding of the cable on the handbrake mechanism. Had to dremel off some of the handbrake frame and then raise it on washers to even refit it and it still bound.

Also some fitment issues with the console, and the unit itself is very heavy.

With some further development it would be a very nice upgrade, but for 997.2 I thought not 100% ready for prime time. Roger and crew took my feedback and hopefully are working up a refined version.
