For those who already own/experienced the 997.1 GT3 it is not worth paying the tradeup difference for the 997.2 GT3. The SW3.9 conversion should do the trick for increasing the thrill factors at the track for less money than the tradeup to the newer model. For those looking to buy their first GT3 then the advice has always been to get the latest model your budget allows.

agreed, but that's assuming you are happy with your engine being rebuilt like this.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about this and this is what I came up with:

1. If the agument is valid for not stepping up to a 997.2 GT3 from a 997.1 due to cost, then there was never a justifucation for anyone to ever move up from a 996 GT3 to a 997. Back in 2007, a used 996 GT3 was over $30K less than a 997 GT3.

2. The same is try today. For a used 997.1 GT3 that is $85K, you can get a compable condition 996 GT3 for $50K.

3. So if you sold your 996 GT3 to buy a new 997.1 GT3 years ago, that ~$30K difference is about the same it is today. Bottom line is whenever you upgrade, the newer car will ALWAYS be worth more and the difference you pay to day do not reflect the impact years down the line.

Here is the another side of the argument.

1. When the 997 GT3 came out in 2007, the base price was only $6K more than the 05' 996 GT3. For that $6K you got a tweaked engine with more power, better suspension, better aerodynamics, larger rear brakes, larger diameter and wider wheels, PSM, alcantara trim standard and some additional weight in the end. Overall it was pretty much a bargain. You could also get a better stereo (sound plus) and seats (adaptive sport) as options not available on the 996 versions.

2. Same is even more true for the 997.2 GT3. For a mere $4700 over the base price of a 08 997 GT3, you now get bixenon headlights standard ($1100 option on the 997.1), a larger torquier and more power engine, an improved suspension, far improved aerodynamics and center lock wheels. You can also get dynamic engine mounts, front end lift and sport buckets that were not available previously. Bottom line is the cars always get better and the bang for the buck seems to improve with each generation.

Finally the 3.9L take:

Upgrading to a Sharkwerks 3.9l is only an option for those that never plan to sell their cars and don't care about a warrantly. Why? Once aftermarket parts are put in the engine Porsche by law is no longer has to warranty any of the drivetrain. Once this conversion is done, the car coud never be certified...unless you never disclose it was done. Of course this means you will never see a dime of the $27K you spent on the upgrade. Even if you go to sell it yourself, you will NEVER see anywhere near the $27K you paid in resale. It is also going to be a hard sell against a newer car that has a warranty.

If you haven't figured out, most of the argument is with the decision today; not looking at the total impact down the line. For Lief, if he likes the GT3 he has today he should just buy and keep it. If he wants something better, he should get a 997.2. If he just wants better performance and doesn't care about warranty or resale he should get a Sharkwerks engine upgrade.

OMG! I can't imagine spending big bucks for something like that and then having them do that. Amazing!
