6 GT3 or 7 GT3??
Not sure if this topic has been covered?
Im considering a 996 GT3 for tracking and some street use.
Would the 997 GT3 perform much better in either situation? positives? negitives?
I will be adding goodies to either car, so both would have all the standard track fare including full bolt in cage.
Any thoughts?
I know used 996 gt3 prices compared to used 997 gt3 prices are significant and thus i could really dress up a 996 gt3 for the money saved from a 997 gt3.
but that said, which car would you guys want in your garage ten years from now?
The Sunroof in the 997 bothers me a little, as i understand cage clearance is affected.
(might consider a RS )
So either a 996 or a 997?? which car would guys rather have for a track toy/ driver combo?

i have both.
997 is the better and faster car, period.
but it's not 50k USD better (not sure price delta in newfoundland).
so if you are willing to splurge, buy 997, if not, 996.
they are very close in performance. whichever GT3 has the better driver will be the faster car.

I think there's a lot of discussion about this on the 6 and 7 GT3 forums. From what I have read, the general consensus is that both cars are amazing on the track, but the 7 is more liveable on the street.
I have pretty much determined now that I will buy a stripper 7 GT3 at the end of the year. I have considered the 6, but will not go that direction because (1) I will be using it as a daily driver in addition to fairly infrequent (10-12 times a year) DEs; and (2) I just plain like the looks of it better. To answer your question, I think that 10 years from now the 996's front fascia will seem even more anomalous than it does now, so give me the classic oval lamps.
Personally, I can't see how someone could be trying to decide between a 996 gt3 and a 997 RS. You could buy a 6 GT3, turn it into a track-only monster, and pick up an RS4 (or something similar) for daily use with the amount you'll drop on a 997RS.
Just my .02.

Again, it all depends what you want... The former is more a raw track oriented car you can drive on the street, where the latter is more a street car that will perform incredibly at the track.

thanks guys..... that is pretty much what i wanted to hear....
naa, i wouldnt consider a 997RS as an alternative..... (wishful thinking) that is out of my league...... price is retarded..... the 997 gt3 is high enough..... but in my zone....
some day a RS, but not today
How do you guys like the chin spolier on the 997 compared to the 996? is it much lower and longer? is it hard getting in and out of driveways/parking lots without scraping? hmmmm.....

get a 6 (no hole) and use the rest to learn how to drive it properly and you will pass any 7 that doesn't have an equal/better drover
if you can afford the 997 RS or if you can get a 996 RS in Newfoundland this discussion is mooty...ugh...I mean moot

+1. And just to add, the 7 GT3 is easier to drive fast and will keep you in line with its nannies.
Again, it all depends what you want... The former is more a raw track oriented car you can drive on the street, where the latter is more a street car that will perform incredibly at the track.

The 997 is easier to drive on the street and yes the 996 is more "raw". But as most have pointed out, the faster car is based on the better driver. Equal drivers - 997 has a slight edge, but as mooty said it is very small.
I think most guys who have a 996 and maybe can't afford or justify the higher price of a 997 keep telling themselves they are a better driver because they don't have any "nannies" to save them. Give me a break.
If the car will be a daily driver - get 997. It is more liveable on the street. But they are both STREET cars. Either car is fantastic! You will LOVE either one.

indeed, there seems to be some confusion, except gt3 nut.
the reason 6 feels more raw is b/c it's bumpier. the 7 has superior chassis. i went off a very familiar track on day one with 7gt3 b/c i didn't FEEL i was fast. when i looked down at my turn in point, i was 15mph faster. but since i didn't feel the speed, i didn't brake until it's way too late. so 7 is smoother b/c it's more sophisticated if you will.
that said the two car is very close.
if you can drive one fast, you can drive the other fast as well.
997 has no nanny. the TC is useless. if you f up, you will spin. turning it off allows you more rear end sweep. i like to wag my tail.
it really is a no brainer. if you are willing to spend the money, by the 7. if you want to save some money but still be right on the bumper of 7, buy the 6.
the only real difference b/n the two cars is price.
big price difference, small performance difference, but different nevertheless.

Money no object then go with the 7, remove 300 lbs, put a solid roof, a good suspension, and monoball/solid bearings. Get one with PCCB, and swap the rotors to US 997 Cup rotors (380mm/350mm). 18" wheels/tires, rollcage, racing seats. LWFW and new gears.
You should be looking at $150k-$160k including the upgrades.
If you start with the RS, you will save $5k on fixing the top, but the RS starts at $160k with PCCB ($40k more than the plain 7 with PCCB on this market). When you are done with the upgrades, you will be around $200k.
If money is a decision factor, then the 6 is the answer. Lots of them have been nicely modified, so you pay cheap for those upgrades.

i have to say i LOVE them both .. the are just lil different... both cars can driven very quickly i still love the 996 platform ... the 7 is a lil more stable but 50 k can get you alot of seat time tires and brakes
but i am a lil bias right now
the street i like the 7 more hands down

Umm, are you guys saying 996 GT3s are in the mid $40k range now by saying there's a $50k differential? I just bought a 2007 with CPO (very light option) for mid $90's which compares with 996s I was finding in the $70's. For $20k and several more years of warranty coverage it was a very easy decision.
I haven't owned a 996 in any flavor but I will say I was very impressed with the 997 and it wildly exceeded my expectations (owned a 997S prior). Suspension was extremely good on both street and track (500 mile drive home from delivery dealership). Friends that have driven my car that own 996 GT3s were extremely impressed and as 3 basically said "What is in this thing, it pulls like a freight train and just keeps pulling..."
