I am a new ower for a 07 RS. I dropped off RS at a local Porsche independent shop to get some work done, also ask them to do the oil change. They charged $495 just an oil change. Am I getting ripped off? Or is it typical for RS car?

As outlined in the link above, there is under $100 in materials, for the oil and Mann filter element. ~$400 in labor, oil disposal etc, strikes me as strong, for less than an hours worth of work (I do my own), unless there are other things included in the service??

 

I'm in Ohio, one of the larger local independents charges $299 for an oil change on a 7.1 GT3 (same pricing as the RS, same materials and labor). Another independent that I've seen bills for on 997 GT3's is around $200. I personally thought the $299 from the one independent was ridiculously high and I figured I'd go to the other independent next time, or at that point the dealer, as I'd get a loaner car at least.

In fairness the $299 is also going to get you a general look over of the car, but they can also make a decent amount of money when they find things that need to be done and they're waiting for the oil to drain in that half hour anyway.

The $500 is insane.

 

That's very steep, I get Mobil 5W-50 from Napa at $5.79 or so, Mann or Mahle filter for around $10-$15, and the most expensive thing is the little $10 O-ring It takes 9.5 quarts so for about $80 total. You don't even have to raise the car. I use a flat clear plastic container sold for storage at Wally World-it fits right under the car without raising it-here's a two-pack, but they sell singles:

Then funnel to bottles and take the old oil to the parts store. Some people don't like it, I like doing oil changes. Those cat litter jugs can take almost all of the old oil, then the rest in a gatorade or V8 plastic bottle with wide opening.

^^++ - I also do my own, Oil in gallon jugs at WM. Filters from dealer for $12 /+ rubber ring and two crush washers. Because I can do it so inexpensively, oil gets changed more frequently than needed. Itake usedoil to local recycling center - drop off for free. I go to a local restaurant and get a five gallon container they use for cooking oil, the recycling center is happy they can drain at their convince and give container to someone else to use.

You didn't get ripped off.... you just paid dealer prices.

My local dealer wants 2,500 for scheduled major maintenance on the RS: Plugs, air filters, coil packs, belt.plugs. I buy everything for around $600 and do myself. These cars are fairly easy to work on once you eliminate the intimidation factor.

Because it's a high reputation shop in CA, when they mentioned the cost of charge, I thought it typical for RS.....

if you're asking, you probably haven't done an oil change yourself. here's a breakdown:

1hr for labor is prob 125+/hr.
mats costs will vary, my last oil change was
10qt 300v $175
1 mahle oil filter $13
misc crush washers

so there's about 200 of markup, which seems excessive.

 

That's nuts. You don't even have to put a car with a Mezger engine in the air for an oil change. The whole process should take well under an hour.

 

Cost me about 60 to 80 bucks total to do it myself and I enjoy doing it.

I did recently go to an indy shop for AC inspection and recharge. The dude charged me 2 hrs of labor ($150 / hr) + $150 bucks of refrigerant. I dont know what kind of premium refrigerant he used vs a $5 can, but I think they are all the same. It's all just porsche tax in the end, no matter where you go.

 

I pay around $150.00 with Liquid Molly at a local independent Porsche facility.
