@TheBruce Years later and this is the best thread I have seen on this subject. I'm picking up a new to me 997 this week and the center console looks a bit worn, so this will be the first project I undertake. You saved me about $700 as I was about to order a new one from Suncoast. Many thanks for blazing the way.

I'm glad I found this thread. After being out of the game for about a year, I picked up a 2007 987 Boxster this weekend, that could definitely use some work on the trim. Great tips and ideas. Excited to tell my wife there are actually some parts I don't have to replace! She thinks I buy these cars because I always need something to work on.

I will be endeavouring this with a 996 and I am hoping the color matched product from Amazon works.

I plan to spray my PCM and HVAC controls and will be sure to post pics when done. May be a few weeks before I have time though.

Not only can’t I get the paint, I can’t sand the plastic fine enough to not use a thousand sheets of sandpaper. I hit it with 400 and it wouldn’t get smooth. Acetone melted things some. At the rate the sandpaper filled up at 400 I didn’t bother going even finer. Not sure how you do this by hand without wasting a ton of sandpaper or sit there for 6 hours.....I sprayed a coat or two and sanded/wiped down between. Results sucked. Really sucked. I’m either buying new or having a pro shoot it for literally same cost as new. Or pick one up on eBay and start over at the beginning.....OR completely start over, by hand and just blow through abrasive until it’s all smooth, and then paint if I can find it! This has been a pain in the *** for sure, for me.

Did you try oven cleaner to remove most of it - there was someone who posted / had a thread on all different stuff to get it off and that turned out to be the best (as I recall).

Give 3M eraser wheel drill attachment a try. They are intended for gooey stuff. It’s the only thing that’ll remove wheel weight glue for me... without requiring hours of work. You’ll still need to sand after but I think the wheel will remove the existing gooey paint relatively painlessly.

Default Thank you for this thread

Although I have a 996 the instructions were excellent.
I used the duplicolour 1132 to match my graphite grey and am pleased with the outcome.

Default Extra Paint

I did this project with excellent, factory-like results though I'm a novice at spraying paint. I ordered the paint from Amazon but bone headed and only bought one can each. I ordered more but it was delayed in delivery so I drove 15 miles across town to find what I needed. Finished the job then my Amazon order arrived. I have two full cans of Krylon Colormaxx Paint + Primer in Matte Black and 2-1/2 cans of Krylon Matte Clear. Amazon won't let me return it.
Make me an offer and I'll ship it to you tomorrow USPS Priority.
Scott

How do those match to original color /finish and how scuff/scratch resistant is it after curing for a few days?

How well does the colormaxx work with the clear. I used colormaxx on one project vs actual automotive paint with an automotive clear and the two didn’t like each other. It worked but super finicky.

These paints, in combo with the SEM primer recommended in this thread yielded awesome, no fuss, factory-like results. They integrate perfectly with the factory interior components.

As far as durability, they seem much tougher than the factory finished parts.

These all look fantastic! I went the leather covered console route, b/c there's no way I have the time or effort for this big of a piece. I did however use SEM prep and spray for the stereo stack - and it worked out amazingly well. Updates the car tremendously from that hideous silver that was in there before.
