I rooted around in there. Everything seems connected. Vacuum lines and any electronics in that area

I think your solenoid is faulty and/or one/both of the vacuum actuators are bad.

At least according this post link, the system fails to sport mode (valves open).

Another relevant post here

It seems the design is such that when a vacuum is pulled on the actuators, the exhaust is quiet. Seem's counter-intuitive to me but I didn't design it

You can try to disconnect the hoses to the valves near the solenoid and pull a vacuum to test. Easier than going below the car.

I had the same thing happen to the PSE on my 2010 C4S Cab..... turned out there was a pinch in the vacuum line. Everything was connected, the solenoid was fine, but the valves were defaulting to open since there was no vacuum pressure to close them (leaving me with the LOUD exhaust note full time) even though I hadn't activated it via the button (so the light was not on). I actually prefer it on 100% of the time, but when I pull out of the driveway at 5.45am for work my neighbors don't appreciate the throaty sound as much as I do.....

You hit the nail on the head for me. I want it on all the time, except at 5am when I leave the house. :-) I'll take a look at the hoses to see if there is anything I can find. I remember the feature working on my 04 C4s so can recognize the distinctive change in sound when it is off.

Well, with time...things reveal themselves. Out for a drive and check engine light came on. Everything appeared okay on the service. Gauges all reading normal, engine idling and running fine. Sport Exhaust: no longer throaty. Hmmmm....

Going to throw a scanner on and see what we find.

Stay tuned...

Okay. Hooked it up at the CEL came on (solid, no flashing). Got Code P1 486. Anyone know what that is?

I did some searching. Can anyone confirm if P1486 is DME Control Unit Fault? If so, any thoughts as to whether that means replacement or is there some other test that can be done?

Thanks!

This is for 997.1. Looks like you have a 2011 997.2.

@jhbrennan, I'd run your VIN to make sure your car has factory PSE
It's hard to remember yesterday let alone 6 years ago...but I checked 3 classified ads for 997.1's with PSE and SC+. They had good pictures of the dash and none of the 3 had a separate PSE button - maybe what I was remembering was push "Sport" to activate PSE and then push "PSAM" to go back to softer suspension with PSE.

Lessons learned - don't trust old guys' memory and OP lack of PSE button appears normal. Hope you've gotten the CEL sorted.

FWIW my 08' C4S 997.1 has PSE but no separate PSE button. It activates with the SPORT button.

Weird- I also have a X51 997.1 C4S and it has the PSE button.

Picture of the dash for us? Did you buy it like that or were there prior owners?

Two prior owners, but from what I can tell neither were really into Porsche's. The original build was nuts though, over $140K MSRP.
