Default DIY Custom Ducktail

Had some time over the holiday and decided to make my own ducktail. Couple reasons for doing this.

1. In my opinion, the aftermarket ducktails are a little too big. I wanted something subtle that continued the lines of the car.
2. I wanted to keep the factory operation of the rear wing at high speeds.
3. Light weight. Adds maybe 3-5lbs
4. Huge cost savings. I have $200 in this without paint.

I bought a spare lid at the junkyard so I could keep my stock one incase this ends up not looking how I want. After test fitting today, I don't think that will be a problem though.

Used cardboard for a mock. Then fiber glassed over it using surfboard fiberglass and epoxy resin. super hard but flexible which is important for a wing that will flex with a little downforce. Final shape with Kevlar fiber filler. I still need to finish sanding and put some glazing putting on before paint but figured I would post of the progress.

How does this affect aero at speeds?

Any worry about it ripping off once elevated?

Has to be less aero than the other ducktails folks use, so not to worried about it.

It might rip off.. will have to see. That's why I kept my stock one.

I like that you are doing something original. I also think that the ducktail everyone puts on is too big.

However, they disable the elevator function and I would be a bit concerned with the extra forces pushing against the rear deck. It might affect stability or worse. Make sure you do some high-speed runs before you commit to painting it.

It bolts on to wing assemble which is pretty sturdy. Wouldnt think a little 2.5 inch addition would make a huge difference. I might just disable the rear wing to be safe though. Will see how she feels.

Was thinking just black for now to make sure I like it. Then get it painted if I keep it on for more than a month.

Getty ducktails on my 993 and 997 have spoiler deactivated and 993 runs noticeably cooler.

That's a negative... not something I'm trying to sell or a lift/drag characteristic I'm trying to achieve for the track. If that day comes, I'll go with a proven setup.

I like this a lot and it's basically what I've been wanting. I like the available duck tails but would prefer one a bit smaller like yours. Looking forward to the finished product.

When I was looking at duck tails (sport classic size) various web sites suggest that they do create more downforce at the back so more lift at the front at high speeds so a slightly more aggressive splitter is required as seen with the Sport Classic.

I fitted the Porsche aero kit splitter and have noticed no lift at the front at track or Autobahn speeds (160 mph +).

I didn't mention this but I have the 991 front sport lip on mine. That might complement this small ducktail well.

very cool that u are making this effort

i echo the concerns about the change in aero at high speeds when the motorized wing lifts up, but other than that, it looks sweet

look forward to seeing the finished product painted out

That could work well, I'm not sure how much downforce the splitters give anyway, a full tank of fuel would probably be more effective!

Very interesting idea and project to watch. My compliments on taking this on yourself, and looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I do have to ask...why the paper towel in the exhausts?
