Default Update on my extra oil consumption

Starting my own thread on this...

I went to the dealer this morning since I'm consuming about 3/4 qt every 400-500 miles on my '09 C2 Base Cab.

They wanted to put me on an Oil Consumption test where the top it off and I come back in 1000 miles and not adding any oil in this interval to see how much it is consuming.

While there I did ask them if they could check the AOS and upon checking they did state the numbers are high in their test and are ordering and replacing my AOS under CPO. I'll probably get this done early next week.

Thanks to EMC2 and Macster for making the recommendation of looking at this. I'll keep everyone posted on what I find.

My car is also under CPO and I brought my 997.2S into the dealership a couple months back for the same reason. They topped off the oil, but I think they told me to call them when the low oil indication light goes on. I don't think i drove anywhere near 1000 miles yet since my car has basically been a queen on the trickle charger all winter. I should call and follow up. This thread was like a reminder. Thanks lol. Also what is AOS?

A faulty AOS would be an awesome alternative to a major engine issue. Good luck and let us know!

go pirates - that sounds like good news (especially in comparison to the alternatives).
Did they find oil in the throttle body, or was there any other symptom used or identified apart from the high consumption to point to AOS?

They ran some sort of test on the AOS and said the threshold should be 7 or .7 and was measuring at 13 or 1.3. and this was indicative it was running too rich.

I could see the tech working on the car from the waiting room and did not see him remove the airbox to my knowledge.

When I go back for the replacement, I will ask about extra oil in the throttle body.

My oil consumption improved after AOS was replaced at 76,000 miles.

I will say regardless - if I go out and have a highly spirited 1 or 2 hour drive, it always shows some oil consumption right after. I assume that is just oil burning off...

Here is a DIY on replacing the AOS on a 997.2 for the guys outside of warranty who are thinking about it.

I did get clarity from the dealer on what they checked. They measured the vacuum level in the crankcase via the oil filter and saw the high numbers there.

Question from the dumb guy in the room with a 97.2.

What is a low oil indication warning light?

I thought the only way to know the oil level was with checking it on the computer. Does the car tell you when to add oil (Oh, and by the way I did check the manual but that does not mean its not there)

This is somewhat comforting news. After reading about the bore scoring thread, I myself also can relate to the OP on the symptoms with my car: burning more oil than many have described here, and also seeing soot on both tailpipes, although quite even. I was worried also because I don't remembering soot accumulating as much in the previous years.

I did call a specialist shop, asked if they do check ups for bore scoping, but was told that they don't really do this as a maintenance thing, really only performed when a engine needs a rebuilt. The service guy over the phone did say that with less frequent driving and shorter distance during each drive (I mostly drive only on weekends, or occasionally a day or two during the week after work, and most of the times distance is short - within 10 miles). He recommended me to take a look when I bring it in for my next oil change, which should be coming up in a couple of months.

My car's CPO warranty expired last September, so it's been a good 8 months or so without any issues (knock on wood). I did pay the dealer $200 bucks for a pre warranty expiration check up last year and came out with no issues, and therefore did not go third party for an extended warranty. I wonder if I made the right decision. My car never had a single issue since I bought it Sep of 2013. All I've done was replace a battery.

The dash will show if your oil is low (I think through the info screen). I've had that happen to me once or twice since I bought the car. The first time for me was after driving from Atlanta to DC during Christmas, and when I was in DC the warning popped up. I added a quart of oil and no more warning after that. Haven't had any issues since but my car does seem to burn more than some, since many say they don't even burn any oil between their oil changes. Doesn't seem like the case for my car.

If you rarely use your car and you pretty much take short trips when you do, you have the worst type of oil sitting in/on/under your engine.

The best thing for your oil is a long run. Otherwise, you just make some water and contaminants, add it to your engine/oil, then let it sit until your next drive, in which you add some more water and contaminants... etc.

First I have heard of oil consumption on .2 engines. I was looking at an early non-S 2012 MT with 24K miles and it had sooty pipes, so assumed right off the bat that it was DFI related....
