Am I crazy for thinking about dumping a ton of cash into a 930? Those have always been my favorite body style Porsches. It just hard to imagine paying the outrageous prices these things are selling for but I'm seriously considering it. What I'm worried about is in my mind I've built this thing up over 20 years as being awesome. In reality it will be slower than my 997 C2S. Has anyone gone down this road and if so please share your thoughts and experiences.

I go through the same thought process with a 993. I am hesitant to buy a 993 simply because the 997 is better in almost every way. That is what makes me lean towards an 87 to 89 911. Prices for 930s are high right now, but I would love an M491 (turbo-look).

I've been searching in a passive way for the past year or so for an early (65-73) 911. Prices seem to be rising almost weekly however, and I have started to look for a later model. Don't know why I want one, but I do. My first 911 was a 964, and it was a blast to drive with the all air cooled sounds coming from the back. Whatever I do, I am keeping the 997 as a dd.

One of my biggest regrets before buying my 997 was not taking a look at similarly-priced 993s. Most of them had "high" miles, in the 75k-90k mark, but were well-taken care of.

I understand even the 993s have their own issues, but there's just so much less to worry about, especially if you're going to be tracking the car occasionally. I already hate the fact that I have to shore-up my 997 for motorsport activities. 993s seem to be good to go out of the box.

The aircooled cars really do seem to hail from a bygone era where Porsche really clung to their motorsport heritage, and the engineering behind those cars reflects that.

I'm going to keep my 997 as well. I just really want to experience that air cooled sound. What I've found is the 964/993 turbos are untouchable for me but I can get into a 930 for mid 80s - 100k. Though then it brings up what other Porsches you can have for that money....never ending cycle of indecision.

eh, porsche had plenty of cockups through those years too that would make you question if they have ever even driven PAST a racetrack, much less actually raced on one.

M96 ain't a winner either, but its one of a long line of screw ups.

Interesting to hear is that just because you've had one for a while of you don't think it's worth the prices being sought?

I have a 993TT that I bought in 09 for a reasonable price (well under $60k). It had 68k miles on it. has 96k miles on it now.

Its a fantastic car. Looks good, drives nice, sounds good, etc.

Would I pay the $100k that it would probably sell for? Don't think so. Do I think a 993 C2s is worth $75k+? nope.

At those prices there are too many other options, like a nice 360 ferrari or high mile 430.

930s are special cars, but I just don't find them very pleasant to drive other than for very short trips.

I've owned a 997 c2s and it was a fantastic car for all uses. I bought my 964 a few years back and had both for some time. I found that as occasional use cars, which they both were, I really preferred the 964. What I mean by this is since I was only driving on the weekend and for pure fun driving, the air cooled car just felt special. A complete blast to drive, though far slower than my 997. Having both does make sense since they're really different driving experiences. I also really like the ability to modify and work on my 964. For me, when I considered garage space and what I really enjoyed, the 997 went.

No wrong decision here. As far as prices, I think there's a very valid reason older 911 prices are where they are and rising. They're worth it.

I feel that way about a 993, the wide body non turbos are my favorite. Had I bought one 3-4 years ago, I would keep it and not turn a profit, but they are just too expensive now.

I've thought about it, too. For a plaything, the desirable ones are already out of my price range and I have no desire to speculate on any car--that's a sucker's bet. At this point, the ones that are left in my acceptable price range are the late seventies and eighties models--and those aren't really stellar cars. And for the price, there are other collectible cars out there that drive better and will cost less in the long run.

I guess the point is that I would love to have one, but I think I've missed the boat.

How much would it sell for? Condition is perfect for a 18yr old car.

Just a few years ago before the air-cooled craziness, this relatively little known model could be had for less than $30K.

I'd rather be driving my car than a 993, not that 993s aren't extremely appealing.

Would I like to have a 993 as well? Absolutely. Would I pay for one at current prices? Absolutely not.
