Hmm. I'm not seeing how the Motul 8100-XCESS is expensive compared to Mobil1 - at least on Amazon, the Motul works out to $6.30/l if you get the case of four 5-litre jugs... the Mobil1 5w-50 works out to $8.48/qt, the Mobil1 0w-40 works out to 4.58/Qt (Walmart). Since I live in LA, I think the preferred weight is 5W-40/50 and the Motul actually ends up being less costly.

I've paid $95 for 12 the last couple of times... slight shipping delay for 1-2 days in this case. I buy more than I need, carry an extra Litre, and after a few orders, have enough extra for another change, without needing to order more, etc.

So I've been reading more about the difference between race oils and every day oils.
Race oils are intended to be used for short time periods (a race) and changed quickly. This would be like mobile1 5w50. Some have engine cleaning additives and some don't. You want the ones that do have it if street driving and not changing oil every time you drive it hard for an extended period of time.
For catalytic converters, race engine oils will eventually destroy them because some of their additives wear out cats.
So the question is do you want an oil that is an all arounder or a very good race type oil you change each track event ? Do you care if you have to replace your catalytic converters early if you are adding extra protection for your engine ?
Even then the best factor is how often you change oil to remove unwanted particles that naturally build up.

Motul update.
Blackstone report back and things look good. The oil held up well in 3k with only higher levels of iron and copper. I think these will drop after another round of Motul. Only needed a 1/2 quart during the fill and engine ran smooth with no smoke ever. I did let blackstone know about the 20 or so tiny metal flecks on the filter. Bright silver in color. Probably the same number as with the prior Mobil 1 fill. Again some black dots from the chain tensioner. Nearly 2 bar in oil pressure at the end of the fill, which was higher the Mobil 1. Not that it matters.
I'll stay with 3k with the new Motul fill until I see improvement with the metals.

OK, cough up the rational..... I am interested (in a good way!) and don't plan to slam.
So, questions:
1) Why?
2) Why is higher pressure at idle good?
3) Why is Mobil 1 less good, what is the matter with it?
4) Bonus question: Why do you feel tilting your car is a good thing to do? I have been warned that it may cause the sender to recalibrate and result in incorrect fill readings.

How about this other idea. Motul is better than M1 0-40 (the latter shears out of grade). There is an oil analysis in this thread showing this.

Perhaps the conclusion is simple. Mobil One is available at Walmart and other local retailers. Motul Xcess needs to be mail ordered and is not available locally. If it's harder to get, it must be better?
However , I do agree that the Motul has higher viscosity at temperature, but am not sure if this equates to "Mobil One will kill my engine". Perhaps it just gives a higher cushion of safety?
