Default Yelled at to "slow down" in residential areas...

We just moved across the country last fall, so getting to know the area etc... Anyway, went out for a quick drive before sunset this evening and pulled back into the subdivision just before dusk.

Now I'm always very cautious not to drive at an unreasonable speed through our neighbourhood (a few hundred houses at most).. Lots of twisty, hilly roads, but it's a rural spot with lots of kids, walkers, dogs, etc.. And who wants build a reputation in their own town as "the douche with the red Porsche".

Anyway, 30 seconds before getting home some 40-something lady walking her dog bellowed as I'm driving past to "SLOW DOWN!!!!"... I glanced at the speedometer and see 57km/h through a 50km/h zone... (35/30 mph).

So yes I was speeding.. But what I'm frustrated at is someone in my very own neighbourhood who felt it necessary to shout loud enough for me to hear while my windows were up for doing 7km (5mph) over the limit.. I'm not disputing I was "speeding" but I deliberately took extra care not to do an unreasonable speed... And I *always* do 60-65 in my Nissan SUV through this area and no one bats an eye. I wonder if she yells at every car that passes by doing over the posted limit?

This happened another time in what I'd call a lower class suburban area in a totally different province, while doing 40 km/h through a 50km/h zone (25/30 mph).

My wife suggests it's the flashy red sports car, haters, the loud (hacked) exhaust making the car sound faster than it is, etc.... I guess I can understand that.. But it's still frustrating.

Anyway had to vent... Anyone else experience this?

Not sure I understand the speed limit in your neighborhood. You're saying that you were doing 57 MPH in a 30-35 MPH speed limit? If so, I would have yelled at you too for driving through the neighborhood like a A-hole. I hate it when people are speeding while I'm out walking the dog and I also have a red Porsche.

It's the sound. Our cars are louder than most when you're in
A lower gear so they think you are going faster. Most of the moms in our neighborhood would run you right over.

NO. He's in Nova Scotia, where speed is measured in KPH, not MPH. he's saying he was doing 57 KPH in 50 zone, or the equivalent of 35 MPH in a 30 zone for us in the States. not unreasonable IMO.

I've experienced the same when under the limit.

Our cars look and sound fast standing still.

Don't let the suburban haters get you down.

Next time slip it into neutral and give her a rev and a smile.

Correct 57 KM/h through a 50 KM/h zone... forgot to clarify that rather important detail :-)

I guess by this point she's already decided I'm going to run someone down, so what more harm can that do

I'm pretty sure it's your exhaust. Some people who aren't experienced with cars equate loud exhaust noises with excessive speed. So that lady probably just heard your "loud car" and assumed you were driving too fast.

I have a Europipe exhaust, and when I'm on local roads I slow down to less than the speed limit because of some people's perceiving the car as moving faster than it actually is. Especially when I'm close to home. It's not my daily driver so I'm rarely in a hurry anyhow.

Happened to me in Worthington Oh. At a stop sign turned left guy on the corner yelled slow down I wasn't even up to 25mph yet and hadn't even passed his yard.

My wife didn't tell me to slow down so I know I wasn't speeding yet. I think the wives have a gps program as she always knows my speed

After being involved with the community association in my neighbourhood for the past 4 years, the number one complaint from residents is always traffic / speed related issues. So a traffic study was commissioned and on average people were driving at or slightly below the 50km/hr limit in my quiet little neighbourhood.
The police officers that I spoke to said that most people have difficulty gauging just how fast or slow cars are going and that may have contributed to the perception of traffic driving faster than they actually are.
Personally, I find 50km/hr way to fast on quiet residential streets so I generally go 30 to 40 km/hr. I still get the odd grimace when I pass pedestrians. I guess our cars just look fast. Add in the sound and the haters will hate.
