Would you trade your 997 straight up for a 991?

base to base, the 991 in a heartbeat, it's not that much bigger, the chassis feels much stiffer and solid, than our 997. The updated interior, no IMS, it's faster, rides better, stiff enough when you want it. I don't get this, 'feels too GT', our 997 seems too GT compared to 996, compared to a 964, our 997 feels like a Cadillac. Would I trade my frankenstein 997 for a 991, not a chance but if mine was not modded, no aerokit. I would probably be posting in the 991 section of the forum.

I like the looks of the 997.2 better than 991, especially from rear, but that's my opinion, one perhaps biased by owning a 997.2S. But, in reality, it'd be hard for me to pass up a newer version of a car I love if we're talking a straight up swap - less miles, more warranty, newer tech, etc....T

911 is for driving, not lifting the hood to show off masses of black plastic.

No offense OP, but this is a bit silly, isn't it?
I would trade the car for a brand new 991 with a market price materially higher, sell that car immediately, and re-buy my own car.
If you don't allow that in the hypothetical, then no way no earth would I trade for a 991. I would rather make my car more raw than more posh, so it would be going in the exact opposite direction. Not to mention that the rear on the 991 C4S (I know you said base, but I'll assume you mean any carrera model) just doesn't compare to my 997.2 ... even my fiance who isn't into cars asked why the newer one looks odd (that crease they did). Just doesn't look as aggressive from the back. Electric steering and about 1/10th of a second advantage from 0-60 (non-PDK)... no thanks!

BTW, multiple recognizable auto journalists have come out and said they think the 997 iteration is the best 911 ever made. This is in the last year or two, so after the 991... Matt Farah for one has said it, and a number of others.
It is frankly closest to the 993 in exterior style, has a modern interior that is still sports car rather than pure posh / cayenne, has the hydraulic steering, and still has many modern touches. I would likely go used R8 V10 instead of a new 991 carrera...

Interesting thread! This is purely anecdotal but I remember back in 1999 when the 996 just came out my sales guy called me to in to check it out. At the time I had a 993 C4S which was a couple years old but certainly no slouch. Maybe I was expecting too much from the 996 but after some seat time I couldn't get my head around "trading up". My 993 just felt like it was the car for me.
It was déjà vu all over again with the 991. Nice car, not for me.

I've seen some used 991 C2Ss for about the same price as 997 GTSs ... so it's not a hypothetical question. Over to you on which you think is priced correctly...

Interesting discussion. Our 06 Carrera is a joy to drive, with classic looks and relative simplicity, compared with a 991. Granted, I've never driven a 991, but, frankly, our 997 meets or exceeds all my expectations for a modern sports car. I really don't think I would trade it for a new 991. I wouldn't trade my 76 F350 for a new F350, either!

Carmax is an interesting dealer. They are a publically traded company that is on the upswing. I expect their model to be the future of used cars sales. Not perfect but more modern and consumer focused.
Anyways, I think their whole system is all corporate policy based and can show some weaknesses, especially with options. That car is a gem and a steal probably! And you get a 5 day money back guarantee that would actually get honored. You can't haggle on price, but you can on condition. Maybe new set tires, detail. or brake job, etc..

I would do a 991 over my 997 any day.

I love my 997.1 absolutely everything about it but I badly want the 991. Just something about the looks and presence of it, those subtle styling evolutions inside and out. While I love the driving dynamics of the 997, I have driven a 991 and my preference is 991. It is definitely more GT and less of a drivers car but it still has that 911 feel and certainly sound.

A totalled 991 with a salvage title would probably go for more than the trade-in value of my 2005 C2 base with 59K miles on it. But if someone offered me a straight-up trade on even a 2012 991 with 80K miles I'd take it in a heartbeat. As long as it was a stick that is. PDK they couldn't pay me to take.
