Exactly. Once the 991 is no longer "The New 911," and they are both just older generations of Porsches, they will be seen more clearly for their individual merits. At that time, the 997.2 will be seen as the model that had it all — newer tech with old-school tight body.

The 991 will likely be as far "out there" as they will go with the 911 form, at least for a good while, and they will likely go slightly more old-school again, in the near future. They seem to try new design themes, and then go back tighten things up, and bring that shape back in line with the iconic 911 form. My guess is the 991.2/992 will be more inline with 997.2 styling. The test mules already do show a cleaned up front intake and DRL intergation, a la 997.2.

Unfortunately, many herein are obsessed with having the latest and greatest. We have a large number of gear heads who simply have to have the latest--just because.

I'm extremely happy with my antique 2006 PTS PCCB hardtop cabriolet. I chose my options carefully, with the intent of hanging on to this car for a long time. I prefer the sound of my pre-DI engine. I like having the option of having a hard top for my cabriolet which is no longer available from Porsche. I like all the leather, and I like the feel of the S Cabriolet. It's a perfect fit for me. And I ordered it without driving it first. I have been a Porsche customer since 1974. As such, I know the company, and they know me. They know what I like, and so when I ordered the car I knew that Porsche would do the right thing. I have driven the 991--in coupe form. The only change that I like is the deployable windscreen for the cabs. But I am happy with what I have.

Sometimes we need to be happy with what we have.

No way. My supercharged 997 with RUF bodywork has every conceivable upgrade done to it with coil over Bilstein, RSS, & TPC DSC suspension, lots of CF interior bits, full Fabspeed exhaust, nose lift, etc which makes it a 1 of a kind car that gets comments everywhere it goes and is an absolute blast to drive, not to mention the RWD dynamics and benchmark hydraulic steering. Trading it form a 991 would give me a new Porsche like everyone else's new Porsche in which I'm not interested. I like my Porsches to be unique and this one certainly is.

as a daily driver maybe switch to a 991. But as a weekend car the 991 doesn t have the rawness and go kart as a 997.1 but thats my opinion. My father owns a 991 c2s 7sp and its awesome but I prefer the 997.1

1000% agree! I could have said it any better. I test drove a 991 C2S (I have a 2007 base C2) recently mainly to check out PDK and it felt like the car was in a completely different category. It didm't even feel similar to my good old 997. Electrical steering, this silly audio transmission of the engine sound and way to many digital gadgets that can and probably will break at some point.

100% nope. 991 is a GT cruiser. I'd fall asleep with it. Plus, it's almost impossible to find in a proper gear box...

If I was getting a cab, I would go with the 991 as the redesign of the top mechanism and profile is real nice.

I am happy with what I have. I have no desire to go to a 997.2 let alone a 991. My '05 is done with the majority of it's depreciation. With the LN IMSB in it at worst there might be a 1% residual risk of $25K for a new engine...versus a 100% certainty that any 997.2 or 991 will yet depreciate at least $25K.

But the question of this thread was would I trade it straight across for a 991 all else being equal, yes, I would. It'd be like someone handing me a check for $50K, not gonna say no to that.

Why do 997 owners put down the 991 so much? The idea that it is a GT car seems odd to me, as it outperforms the 997 in many ways. It is newer. Interior is much nicer. It is negligibly larger. It looks great to my eyes. I love my 997.2 for the value it offers, at the price point for a GTS.

I own a 997, because of the value in the 997.2 vs a new 991. I think they both are great cars. Rare for any car to become a collectors item. It is possible that neither the 997 nor the 991 will be collectors cars.

I get that the 997 is more raw, and the steering is different. Thats cool. But the 991 is a very capable sports car.

I can think of three reasons:

1. Jealousy aka can't afford it
2. They don't like the looks and refinements.
3. It's fun to poke fun at/ tease owners

I think I laid out many reasons as a car enthusiast and not a cruiser guy. I would move to 993 instead of 991. I can afford any of these cars but wouldn't buy new (personal choice for how I spend my money).

Refinement and looks are key. No intention to poke fun at anyone. It is a great car. Just the direction is not for what I'm looking for in a sports car. :-)

I do think the move to electric steering is a let down to gain just a touch of additional fuel economy. It simply is not as good as hydraulic and brings the 991 a small step closer to the GTR.

Again, I am looking to add more rawness to my car. Going to add the sharkwerks bypass and get the fister mod... I would be okay with stiffer suspension too. I love the look and feel of the interior and having driven a cayenne for some time, can say 100% I prefer the 997.2 interior (.1 has a tendency to wear poorly with the nav unit buttons unfortunately).

Different preferences make the world go round but I'm confident the 997 will be preferred in a few years because the newer cars will be even faster than the 991 and probably be more refined still, given the new car buyer market is mostly rich people wanting a status car. The 993 will still be preferred to the 996 and 997... Again, because it will be further still from what is available new :-)

I'd wager on it ;-)
