Hartech in the UK did an extensive report on cylinder scoring in Porsches. It's really quite a good read. But from the way I see it, this was a problem in pre DFI motors only. Hartech did state that not enough time had passed to absolutely state that problems would not appear, but if this was really a problem, I suspect we would hear a lot more than we have after 6 years of service. IMHO, there is no need to look here for problems.

The report discussed cylinders laying on their sides, the affect of gravity on the oil being sprayed at the skirts, the affect of the stress being more to one side than the other due to the crank push back (vectored forces), and the problem of oil depletion in general. It did not get into the problems of acidic oil laying on the cylinder walls at night (especially a problem with old oil and parking on a camber). It's easy enough to Google this.

The article I'm referring to about oik washing was in Excellence magazine sometime in the last year. With the Blackstone UOA, the basic analysis they do is decent, usually on the positive side, but you should pay the extra to get the optional TAN & TBN value results as I've had very positive responses on a standard analysis then had them rerun some of the sample to provide these additional values and with the Motul 8100 xcess 5/40 am seeing some viscosity reduction down to 5/30 and some breaking down of the anti-wear additive properties in the oil. This was in my wife's DD 997 at a 5,500 mile change interval (target 5,000 but was on a trip) so I'm going to stay with the Motul oil but reduce the interval to 4,000 miles and check those rII'mts. If I see the same thing will likely try Jake Raby's oil next as a DD non-modified car should be fine at 1/2 Porsche's recommended oil change interval.

Good information. Thanks. Please keep us posted as you continue. Do you still send your oil to Blackstone, or use someone else?

Is that car driven short runs, prone for gas contamination, perhaps?

I'm still sending it to Blackstone, but having them do the additional values analysis. Concurrently I'm also sending a sample and the oil filter to Jake Raby for his and Lake Speed's analysis followed by a copy of the Blackstone report for their views on the values. I'm considering having Jake rebuild/upgrade the motor on my RUF supercharged 997, making it a 4.0, using Nikies, different lower compression pistons, etc, to guarantee its longevity since it's such an awesome car and fairly rare.

Not sure. I don't have a 997.2 and think it was a general statement about the new engines, not about a specific car, I don't think.

Thanks for the info. I don't think the Blackstone form I have has any additional options aside from the extra $10.00 I paid to check the oil longevity. How much does it cost for the extra tests? Thanks

I think it's $10 so maybe you're already doing them. They're in the bottom section of the report form.

i bought a 997.2 turbo in 2012 to replace my 997.1 turbo because I knew it'd be the last manual; it's my "forever" car and i have autocrossed it and tracked it and driven it to work. it has had no technical or other issues.

to preserve it, i bought a 991 gt3 for motorsports, finally embracing PDK, and keeping the forever car as my daily driver. and have been very impressed with it as well. so if manual is not important to you then you might move right to 991.
