It's interesting to read all the response as I struggled with this exact same question when I started looking. In the end the additional cost couldn't be justified in my opinion.

If anything I was actually contemplating going the other direction and "downgrading" (term used lightly) to a 993.

Specifically, the fluidity of the the shifting, the response of the drivetrain to the electronics seemed seamless in the 991. In the end, personally I like my 997.1 C2 non S manual better than either but it's all preference
I agree with you 100%

About a year ago I purchased a 2008 Carrera S cab with 2600 original miles. It is meteor gray with natural red interior, sport seats, deviating black carpet, painted seat backs, painted console, sport chrono, Bose,
Manual transmission, etc. I purchased this car because of the colors and virtually no mileage. Although we all know that a 997.2 is an improved car, I felt that the differences weren't sufficient to dissuade me from this purchase. I also favor the look of the 997.1 rear lights.

+1

Meteor gray with those options and low miles sounds wonderful.

PDK is the game changer if you are not a manual shift type guy... as other posters have noted. Otherwise not worth it.

The PDK is a lot better than the Tiptronic but then the 991 PDK is a big step up too.

I've had a 997.1 C2STip and have a 997.2 C4S PDK so perhaps can help:

- Prefer the Gen 2 'look' - LED lights make it look far more modern
- Ride and handling is noticeably better in the Gen 2
- Gen 2 needs aftermarket exhaust mods - too quiet
- Gen 2 has reliable engine - nice to not have the worry hanging over you
- Also had a 997.1 Turbo and prefer the 997.2 C4S

I have also driven a 991 Carrera S and the PDK is nice, and the noise is A-MAZING. However, it is a very different car to drive - it is basically a comfy GT car and no longer feels like a sports car unless on track.

In summary, the step up in price is worth it to the 997.2. That's why i did it!

As a 997.1 owner who considered this many times over just not worth it... To me 997 is perfect looking only if I wanted pdk or a 997.2 gts would I upgrade. Otherwise like everyone said for PCM navi just get aftermarket for like 1-2k$ or wait and completely jump into 991

997's seem to be selling a bit better now and prices have gone up some as well.

I agree with everything you stated above.

Concerning the exhaust on the Gen 2 - at the very least, a center muffler delete is required to awaken the exhaust note. This should be done whether you can has stock mufflers or PSE mufflers.

I only want a manual in a Porsche, so the only reason I thought about upgrading to a .2 was the DFI engine and rid of IMS. But when I reasoned it out, keeping the 997(with LN upgrade) there's a very tiny, remote possibility of a $25K expenditure due to IMS, versus the definite $25K expenditure of upgrading to the .2. And a .2 is still depreciating more per year than my '05 at this point.

Is it? It is perhaps if you prefer longer clutch feathering for smoother transitions. I drove plenty of 991s with PDK and did not notice any shifting performance improvement, especially if one compares it to the 907.2 in SC Sport or Sport Plus. Now… people may think shifts are faster due to the psychoacoustic effect the Symposer brings,

I wanted to stay away from the DFI, with the possible need for carbon cleaning of the intake valves. Granted I don't think that's problem with the 3.8 997.2 motor and I've never even seen it even mentioned in here. But I did not to even think about it. Sure was, and is a problem with its Audi cousins.

There are also some other potential issues with the DFI engines that are starting to surface - oil washing from the cylinder walls from the fuel being derectly introduced, causing some cylinder scoring and premature wear, premature failure of the high-pressure fuel pump (997.2 cars have two fuel pumps - a low pressure and a high pressure). Not having the IMS bearing is nice, but as many others have said, unless it was for the PDK or to go from a base car to an S or GTS, I don't think it's worth it to upgrade from a .1 to a .2. If you want the more modern looking LED lights, that's a simple upgrade and there are a number of rear light choices available. Makes the 997.1 look like a brand new car again.

This is the first time I see these 997.2 issues. I have a 2009 C2S and it is in perfect working condition. I always send the oil to be analyzed by Blackstone Labs and the results always comes back perfect...no gas, water, coolant or any other contaminants found in the oil. As a matter of fact, they always recommend to prolong oil changes. I use Motul Excess 8100 oil 5W40. My car currently has 37k miles.
