When I was looking at a car at Paul Miller a buddy in the area pointed me to this shop for a PPI with high praise:

Hope it turns out to be a minor hibernation issue.

Just heard back from Ray Catena... NO GOOD! They are saying there is a cracked piston and engine needs to be replaced at $25k! I have calls into Porsche and some of the recommended Porsche service shops... Car had 25k Miles and full service history... Engine should not need replacement!

Sorry about the bad news. I have heard of cracked heads, D chunk cylinders, failed rod bearing bolts and, of course, IMS failures but a cracked piston? Was the car ever severely over-reved?

So sorry. Just a thought here: if the aos had failed the piston damage might have resulted from the compression of oil in the cylinder. Hydro-lock (?) is the compression of fluid when head gasket fails. Something has to break when that occurs. Not sure if that applies here. I'll have a scotch with you tonight. Good luck and keep posting. Gerry

Very sorry to hear that. I was really hoping that it would something simple. I hope PCNA does something for you as a gesture of goodwill since you are a 3 time Porsche owner and the original owner. With all that's going on with the GT3s right now Porsche could use some goodwill.

I melted a piston in my Turbo once and it smoked like that! Sounds like they found out the problem.

On the 2006 there is no common component in the exhaust (unlike the center muffler on a 997.2), right? Why would there be smoke from both sides if it was a cracked piston. Seems it would only be from one side, unless OP added an X-pipe. What am I missing?

Oooops. Never mind, went back after submitting my post and see that that the original post shows only one side. My mistake.

Very sorry to hear this. Best wishes for a good outcome.

Condolences re the car and GL with PCNA. FWIW, Hartech writes about how they're seeing gently driven cars come in with engine failures... they have an interesting perspective on why this occurs. http://hartech.org/docs/buyers%20gui...20part%205.pdf
