I priced out an independent shop (bodymotion)... They quoted around $18k so when it is all said in done, at this point, I just assume let Porsche install the motor... The reason they have gotten so pricey is that Porsche stopped manufacturing the motors so they have to buy everything part by part. 3 years ago a new factory motor was around $8k.

Since there doesn't appear to be any new 997.1 engines left, anyone know how hard it would have been to install a 997.2 engine? I think it would have been a nice upgrade (no IMSB), but I don't even know if they are compatible without doing extensive mods.

Sorry to hear that you had to go through this.

Porsche engines are not what they used to be. Years ago you could do so much to an engine--build it stronger, modify it, etc. Now, it sounds like anything you do can easily lead to a premature failure.

Trust me, this sort of behavior by Porsche will start to impact their business. People aren't entirely stupid.

Cannot agree more! While a first time Porsche owner, was very proud to join the ranks, but I am absolutely not impressed by how they stand behind their products, by how they discount any issue, and by their attitude towards 2nd hand buyers or ones who do not have a full stable of Porsche cars in the garage. Basically unless you have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with Porsche, you get zero service. My next car either would be an older Porsche, GT3/Turbo with Mezger engine, or completely a different brand.

Also, Porsche brand is now getting very diluted with incredible number of models, they're becoming another BMW, with almost as many models. Macan just release, and then next year they're gonna release a new Cayenne Coupe?! What's next? Small econ sports car competing with VW GTI?

Ferrari has taken the opposite approach, limiting the #of Ferrari's built, and using Maserati, Alfa to fill-in the numbers... I have no idea why VW/Porsche doesn't adopt the same model?

We are not the growing market anymore. It's China and I'm guessing that studies show that they want a vast selection of cars.

Agreed, but that's the same for Ferrari, no? They're gonna make the other brands (with some Ferrari parts) fulfill the model range and keep Ferrari as the pinnacle brand... Porsche/Audi/VW should probably do the same. While Porsche has never been as upmarket as F-car, it's really getting diluted to a ridiculous level... I understand WHY they had to build Boxster, then Cayenne to sustain themselves and support sports car development, but then they added Panamera, Macan, Cayenne Coupe and possibly another model range to come next? It's a shame... I vividly remember as a child that Porsche owners were considered different, car guys, petrol heads, appreciating classics, heritage, etc... in a few years you'll see getto, beat-up 15yr old Porsche Cayenne's being driven by kids in high school.

I guess you're right as China sees Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi as all the same, and Caynne coupe is being created to compete with X6 apparently (a completely useless car IMO).

I'm with you Alex but I see that those days are gone. Ferrari is different because they're a small independent company that had always looked at passenger cars as a means to an end. The end was racing and that's all that mattered. Porsche really blew it when they got too big for their britches and thought they could take over VW. They came close but in failing they left themselves wide open and the Porsche car company of yesteryear is gone.

more money. they want to hit the every day consumer (in porsche terms of course), while diluting risk (so to speak) with as many models and types of cars as possible.
