OMG, this REALLY REALLY sucks, as you totally planned this right, even budgeted for the IMS upgrade, I guess time was not on your side, and you should have taken it in, right away!

Sorry, I don't wished this on my worst enemy. It sucks to have to spend that type of money. Is your VIN part of the lawsuit?

Yes, my VIN is part of the lawsuit.

I looked at the published failure numbers and made my plans to replace the bearing as "urgent", but not "critical". I didn't even run two tanks of gas through the car before heading to the shop. Alas this is where I am now. Standing on the side of the snowy, freezing road waiting for the tow truck gave me plenty of time to think about where I could have cut 30 minutes of driving out of my ownership of the car, allowing me to make it to the shop before the failure. There's always risk buying a used car, and somebody has to be on the unlucky side of the bell curve. Sadly, that's me this time around.

pls let us know what the diagnonis is... very curious to find out if it indeed was the ims bearing that failed.

very very sorry to hear this.

his car being a part of the lawsuit (small bearings) he should get 'something' back for costs... how much is the question...

Wow, this is the first time I've seen this "real time", literally as the new owner is posting about the car. Like everyone is saying, I'm sorry for this too, incredible bad luck. We can only hope that the settlement make the hit less damaging. I wish you the best.

OP - I would write PCNA a long letter and see if they can step up to the plate on this.

Hope this turns out good somehow.

Sorry to hear this bad news. I'm on my second water pump at 48000 miles.

So sorry to hear this. And to think you did your due diligence and still had a bad outcome.

I looked at the documentation sent to me from the settlement (my car is also in the VIN range) and it looks like a non new vehicle purchaser and a non- CPO'd car would be eligible for a flat 25% reimbursement by PCNA up to 10 years or 100,000 miles (less for greater milage up to 130 K miles). A CPO'd car in the same category would have qualified for 100% reimbursement.

The option of excluding yourself from this settlement appeared to have ended 10/15/13 according to what I recieved. You might want to consult an attorney and see if you can pursue other legal avenues against PCNA seeing that you purchased the car after the exclusionary date and thus had no opportunity to raise an objection to the settlement.

In any case you should call PCNA at 1-800-486-9809 and notify them of this event. I believe that the car has to be repaired at an authorized dealer in order to get any monetary remedy.

Good luck.

Thanks for the details, boolala, I'll see what I can work out with PCNA. In the meantime, I wrote a comprehensive letter, per Para82's suggestion, and will forward it to the right guy once I figure out who that is.

Sorry about your loss. I was out of here for a while. Did you get a diagnosis on what actually failed?

As of question on MY 06+ engines internal changes you need to talk to engine shops, i would hate to try to repeat all that. There are some minor improvements there, ask Jake from flat6 or your local builders.

I spoke to the IMS team at PCNA, and the terms of the settlement are apparently written in stone. In other words, since I'm a "used" owner instead of buying it new or as a CPO from a Porsche dealer, I'm entitled to 25% of the repair cost. Any claims after October 15th must have the work done at a Porsche dealer. There are absolutely no exceptions to these terms, and Porsche will not consider goodwill regardless of the situation. So the settlement looks to be great if you're a new or CPO owner, but not so much for someone like me. 25% is a drop in the bucket on a $23k repair, and I feel there are better options out there for the same cost. The irony is if the previous owner kept the car for one more month, the engine would have been covered 100% by Porsche.

I don't yet have confirmation, but the probability seems high based on the discussions with the dealer and independent shops. This is all going off of the story of "how" it failed.
