a huge congrats, the story about your son running out all excited really is icing on the cake.
So after all this, I picked up the car today. I absolutely love it. When I pulled in the driveway, my 3 year old excitedly ran out to the car and asked if there was a seat in there for him. At the least, I have his approval! I threw him and the 1 year old in the back and drove them around the circular driveway a couple times. Everyone is happy.
I'll post some pics tomorrow, and thanks for everyone's input!

+1 to Nathan's comment above. The early 2005 bearing can be upgraded to the LN type. I had mine done for $1500. Price factor makes this the best 997 value for the money. Go for it!
Btw- Another ten grand for an S only gains you 2/10ths of a second.

Unfortunately, this purchase bit me in the ***. I did an incredible amount of diligence beforehand, ensuring it had a solid, documented maintenance history and what not. It "was" a CPO car (expired in September), and also passed a PPI with flying colors. It ran flawlessly for the month that I owned it, and I felt good about the car. I took it out for the big Thanksgiving Porsche run last weekend in NY, and all my friends were commenting on what a great car it is, and what an excellent decision the purchase ended up being.
All that chatter must have jinxed me, because things quickly turned south. The plan was to drop the car off at my shop on the way home, to upgrade the IMSB. The car was dropped off, but by a tow truck rather than by me. During the drive, I heard a short rattle at the back of the car, which I thought was from another car pulling a small trailer behind me. About 8 seconds later I heard another very short rattle. It was intermittent like this and I quickly figured out it was my car, and pulled over. The rattle sounded kind of like sheet metal rattling, rather than "clanking". I had my mufflers off the other day, and thought they may not have been re-secured properly, with movement against the hangers causing the noise. Nevertheless, i pulled to the side of the road and hopped out to see what was rattling. As I got out, the car stalled at idle and that was all she wrote. My shop pulled the oil filter and it was filled with metal. They don't think it's the IMSB based on the metal they found, but we didn't yet explore more to figure out the true cause. They are guessing a rod bearing.
This is my 4th Porsche and all others have been rock solid. I'm weighing my options and waiting for some sort of Christmas miracle. In the meantime, I hope Santa has a new flat six for me in the back of that sleigh of his!

Sorry for the bad luck. I guess you'll spend a boatload of money to fix it that you didn't expect to and you will have a very nice car to enjoy. Keep the faith.

Did you get a prognosis yet and cost to repair? Where did you bring it for the repairs to be done? Let us know. We all learn from each other.

I emailed Jake Raby and he feels the IMS bearing failed based on my description of the incident. It is sitting at Powertech right now, I'm still researching my options, and I'll be sure to update the post as I get more info. No more physical inspection of the engine has been done yet, as it is almost irrelevant since the engine is blown either way. I'll surely look into the mode of failure when the repair is done.

Quoting myself here, did you get an extended warranty? That's why I avoid 05's at all cost, the initially cost to own one is cheaper but add the cost after a new engine and it's better to get a 997.2 instead. I hope this get resolved soon and I hope PCNA helps with this but I highly doubt it.

No on the warranty. The plan was to address the biggest risk (imsb) and go from there. You're right, with the cost of the car and the $23k I'll likely have to put into this, I'd easily be in 997.2 territory.
