06+ motors are much rarely suffer from D-chunk, they have slightly better circulation, so less overheat of 6th cylinder and other rather small multiple things but it all adds up. talk to good engine builders, you will learn a lot of interesting things.
Can you point me to supporting data in reference to 06+ internal upgrades? Specifically 'D-chunk/, circulation/6th cylinder' etc..

Go for it. The base is still hella fast on regular roads and is a blast around corners. But drive both if you want to be sure. :-)

My '05 had a factory new motor when I purchased and I put a low mass flywheel in the last few months. I would recommend if you purchase the car and change the bearing, do the flywheel at the same time. It is a blast to drive now whereas before it was only lots of fun.

+1 i would like to know as well. both cars here amongst friends that had their engines go on them were 06/07. the 06 C2 all cylinders scored, the 07 C2S 6th cylinder.

personally i think its hit and miss.

I wanted the lowest entry price into a 997, bought a base '05 in early '09. Did the LN when it needed a clutch. Starter cable, shift cable, water pump and windshield washer motor replaced under CPO and my B2B extended warraties. Car has depreciated $10k in the 4.5 years I've enjoyed it. Most economical car I've ever owned.

So I went to see this car over the weekend, along with a couple others. I'd give the interior around a 9/10. Mostly in great condition with a few defects here and there. The full leather definitely brings the richness level up a notch. The exterior is about 8/10 with a small door ding on the passenger door, and scrapes on the bottom of the front bumper cover where someone drove over a cement parking block or something. The paint shows fine scratches/swirl marks as is highlighted on most black cars, and professional detail will bring it to an acceptable level. It drove well and there were no surprises.

I also stopped at Jack Daniels Porsche and drove an almost identical black/black '05 base with 25k miles. It drove similarly, albeit with a stiffer clutch. Excellent condition. They are asking $43k as a point of reference. Last, I drove an '06 997S cab with sport exhaust. I could definitely feel the extra torque of the S and it made the car feel a little more lively. It isn't night and day, but you can feel feel it. Oh, and the PSE is intoxicating. I clearly need that.

Bought my 09 4S cab w/50k miles,
PDK, full leather,sport chrono, SAT,
Vented seats, heated seats and steering wheel, 5mm spacers, just loaded. Paid $52k flat. Immaculate. Length of time looking...every day, 5 different sites, every dealership from Ohio to FL to Maine...4 months. Wanted blue, bought Ruby Red.

Oh, forgot to mention, bought it out of Detroit, small broker/dealer, did PPI at Porsche dealership. Shipped back to Jersey on 3 car wedge trailer. Arrived a little dusty but perfect. I bought it through pictures about 50, and PPI, without going to Detroit, or physically driving it. A little nerve racking but worth it for sure. Love my 09 4S Cab w PDK.

Yah still waiting to see data backing his claim that the 2006 has all these internal upgrades over an 05...nothing so far.

Muffin man,
I don't have PSE but added the fister exhaust mod(search gundo hack or fister mod) which is basically PSE on all the time(It's just an exhaust bypass with an on/off switch) and it sounds incredible when it starts and anytime over 3500 rpm. I would not let not having PSE deter you from buying the otherwise right car for you. $400 and about an hour and you can have Gundo/fister on your car.

So after all this, I picked up the car today. I absolutely love it. When I pulled in the driveway, my 3 year old excitedly ran out to the car and asked if there was a seat in there for him. At the least, I have his approval! I threw him and the 1 year old in the back and drove them around the circular driveway a couple times. Everyone is happy.

I'll post some pics tomorrow, and thanks for everyone's input!

utkinpol, I see you have the 996 X-51 oil pan... what does that do?

Nice! I'm guessing you got the 05 you were looking at in showroom condition?

Yes, it is the '05 described in the first post. Black/saddle tan. I will give the paint some detailing love tomorrow and the car should be up to my standards. It will go in for the IMS bearing sometime in the next month.

Btw, has anyone done the ims solution? Any idea on cost?

CONGRATS! It's a happy feeling when it all works out!

Also, that "family" approval and excitement is just icing on the cake. Enjoy!
