The GTS is arguably the pinnacle of the 997. The 991 is just getting started. I think it's too soon to reach any firm relative conclusions.

997's Rule! It's the best representation of the modern day 911. The 991... Remember the controversial 996... Porsche enthusiasts were disappointed in that design. Don't you guys think the rear of the 991 resembles an Aston Martin???

In moving further away from the essence of the 911, porsche is taking a calculated gamble. I understand that porsche feels they need to broaden their appeal, but in doing so, they open up the door for previous loyal buyers to comparethe 991 to other models. The 991 might be a heck of a machine, but the new viper, new 6 series, and new corvette are going to be killer machines too. Previously we could say that the 911 was a totally different kind of machine. Can we still?

I made the move from BMW to Porsche last year after driving several different BMWs for a dozen years+ ... It was evident that the M badge had moved too far off course from my beloved E36 M3. The M badged cars are destined to appeal to a broader volume and softer part of the market. The latest M badged BMW's read more like a spec sheet then the "ultimate driving machine" when you've had a taste of the M's of old. After test driving various brands I concluded that the 997 had just about the right amount of rawness along with serviceability and some level of luxury for where I'm at in my life and what I want to drive. To me Porsche has veered off track the 991. It is not exactly what I've come to like with Porsche in terms of the 997 and 993 models. Maybe in 10 yrs when everything is electric... I may be forced to appreciate it then but more likely I'll just move on to another brand or perhaps a more classic p-car in a 993TT or 993 2CS.

Of course, I still have friends with BMWs who loyally buy the next model of M's or 3 series regardless of what BMW does to it... some choose to do that and to each his own. I've chosen to look at every car purchase as a decision point which I may have to live with for years to come. It's also an opportunity to re-evaluate the brand and their car on it's merits at that point in time. Hopefully Porsche will avoid the path BMW took and steer back towards a more 993 and 997ish type car in the future. The 996 to 997 correction was welcomed and gives me hope this time around as well. Like some I'll be voting with my dollars when the time comes if Porsche changes course.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this happening unless Porsche sales drop dramatically over the next couple of years. But you may find what you're looking for in the upcoming GT3 and or maybe the Boxster/Cayman (depending on space requirements).

Even if that were true and not merely a projection of your own self-esteem issues, in 3-4 years the cost of buying a MY13 991 will have dropped drastically. However those things about it many of us genuinely abhor will not have changed.

To me it resembles a cinema marquee.

Literally? Then one could assume your head has exploded? Yes, that would explain a lot.

However, to suggest Porsche CANNOT make a mistake, and does not ever get it wrong is just completely ignoring the history, you forgot 996, 944, right? Also, you can never rely on the past to predict future. I strongly believe today's Porsche is just NOT the same company as it once was, even casual observers, including family and friends who have no bone in the Porsche brand, have commented that Porsche has been watered down as they now make a slew of cars including SUV, 4 door, and Cross overs. Do you think that in 20yrs, they got the same brand recognition as a primary sports car manufacturer as today? I do not think so... they probably will be financially successful, but the brand is just not the same, and their focus is just not the same, and that *might* lead to their demise. My 0.02.
seriously? talk **** all you want about the 996, but can you even count how high the number of them they sold? hardly a "mistake"
