Wink Impressions: GTS Owner Drives a 991S

Guys,

I will make this short, as others, who write better than me, have detailed their impressions prior. I am a 2012 GTS owner with SPASM and 20 K miles on the car since June, and have enjoyed 3 Laguna track days, 1 AX, and commuting (!).

I drove my friend Steve's 991S around LA this last weekend, and here are my brief impressions:

991 Pros
plush quality interior, PCM, human interface
refined feel
beautiful in black, *** end looks more svelte, less slabby
pdk
power

991 Cons
Artificial disconnected steering
Road feel diminished
Artificial contrived sound symposer
Sun roof is an abomination - ask me how I really feel via private message
overbadged in rear (get delete and add back what you want)

Overall I would say that the GTS is very very different than the 991. More visceral, raw, and involving. Different car.

I have restrained myself from making myself feel better that I bought a GTS instead of waiting for the 991. I wanted to like the 991 more. It is a a great car, but just does not have that exciting connected feel the GTS does.

I agree with much of unclejosh's assessment. i have an '11 GTS and spent 48 hrs in a loaner 991S a week ago. I've had an 08 C2, an '09 C2S PDK in the last few years.

I thought the sound symposer sounded like a lame idea, until I heard it. It actually sounds great. The new PDK programming is great with a much more noticeable "blip" on downshifting.

Handling seems great. They claim less understeer, but hard to tell on the street. I'd love to try it on the track.

In sum, I really enjoyed driving the 991. But getting back into the GTS felt great. I'm sure I'll have a 991 in the next couple of years (GT3? GTS?), but I'm not in a rush. The GTS is that good.

I believe they badged the 991 so much so people would know that it is Carrera rather then a baby Panamera.

Pls, not another comment from someone that apparently owns neither.

You know which is the upgrade when the reverse scenario seldom occurs (I luv my 991 and am happy I didn't buy a GTS).

I purchased my GTS because I got a great deal on it. If I had been offered the 991S at the same price I would have taken it.

I dont have to own one to be tired of a bunch of guys trying just a little too hard to convince themselves (and everyone else) of their GTS purchse. It wouldnt be so bad if it was contained to 1 thread but there is a new one (or 2) everyday

It's funny to read that a 997 is "...more visceral, raw..." because about 6 years ago everyone was complaining about how refined the 997 was!

If we all strapped on a 1973 911S we would be in for a shock.

Climb into a 1st year 911 (that's 1965) and you'd think you were driving a farm tractor.

Yup, rinse and repeat. Pretty much happens every time a new one comes out. Hey, it's cool, my car suddenly became more visceral and raw . I feel all tingly about that.

No sound symposer needed there at least.

Hey Vern did you ever consider that some guys really do love the GTS?

Agreed to a point, BUT, did you drive 991? I did and I totally concur with the OP.

The car has moved more towards GT, just like 997 is more GT than 993, so yes, it is the same move towards comfort, luxury, appeal to masses that has started after 996... BUT, there is a tipping point, that's when the pure essense of a sports car, with pedigory of 911 tips over to a plush, fast, GT sports car to be considered an alternative to BMW M, Aston, AMG, etc... Has 991 crossed that tipping point? I am not so sure, but it's damn close!
