997.2 Engine Reliability

Finally ... I have learned something relevant to my car on this post. Thank you Tony!
Cayman ... reliability is the ability of something to perform its assigned task throughout its life expectancy with a minimum of down time. Product support, like replacing high pressure fuel pumps, may increase reliability, but do not define such. The 997.2 feedback, per owners in the know, indicate that the DFI motor may indeed be the best motor that Porsche has designed and built to date (yeah, I know, the Mezger was a gem). If that isn't good enough, then buy a different brand. If it is good enough, then buy a Porsche and post your pictures. Really, there is nothing more to add to this post.

I continue to think that for street use, even spirited driving, a 3rd radiator is not needed.

Actually CaymanPower is correct that the radiator I pointed out to is an oil/coolant heat exchanger. When the engine starts cold, that part it is used to warm up the transmission and once the front thermostats open it also helps to cool the transmission. So... when wrong I apologize fro my statement and hereby correct it.

I'm with you on the two radiator scenario.
And now, full of fear that I might be adding fuel to this post ...
But for whatever it's worth, on a warm weekend, not long ago, running up the 1 out of Mill Valley and past Muir Beach, as we started climbing David's (2010 C4S with MT) hit 200 on the oil temperature while I (2010 C4S with PDK) hit 225. Those are computer controlled gauge readings ... But the cars are the same excluding the transmissions. Water temp held steady at 175, but we all know that gauge lies!
Please, before anyone starts going off on this, allow me to stress that this was NOT scientific!
Back to changing the tire air and waxing those gears ... Maybe I'll bleed the speaker wires as well and grease the wiper bearings.

The difference is Porsche products are in general WAY more expensive than BMW's so one should expect and demand better reliability standards from Porsche!
BMW's electrically driven water pump is even more sophisticated than the ones found on the 9A1 engine, despite the car's lower price tag.
My 997.2 has 40K miles on it. It's never had any repairs of significance. By the time my previous car hit 40K miles (2007 335i with the same N54 engine as your 1M) the dealer had replaced both turbos, fixed a VANOS problem due to cam ledge bearing scoring and replaced the HPFP. The water pump blew out later in life, just like they all do with that engine. I also had to have the intake valves walnut shell/media blasted to remove carbon buildup and I had to have a faulty injector replaced.
BMW's modern V8 engines are even worse. There's currently a silent recall/"customer care" program taking place for those poor souls who own an N63 V8-engined car like a 550i. The top-mounted turbos cook everything under the hood leading to all sorts of collateral damage as Jake Raby would put it.
The MA1/9A1 may not be a perfect engine but you are unwise to use BMW as model of reliability.

Why do you think I bought the 1M ?! Well, because the N54 engine was first introduced in the market back in 2006. My car is a MY2011 which means that all its youth's major engine reliability issues were already sorted out by the time I bought it. The engine isn't exactly the same... for instance, it has an ADDITIONAL water radiator right behind the front bumper (LHS) from factory, which was originally intended only for the 35i's in hot climate countries!

This is the exactly same reason why I say the 991's engine is more reliable than tha 997.2's engine... it represents an evolution made from the same base.
And, I think a third radiator is advisable for these cars and even more so with PDK!

Yes, that's correct, except that I didn't say they were the same... I said both BMW and Porsche share the same suppliers which means, and that was my point, that their reliability standards are the same therefore Porsche and BMW reliability standards are also about the same.

I didn't say BMW is a reliability model. I said I found the BMW 1M Coupe's engine reliable.

Worth Googling. Use the Urban Dictionary. Who knew there were levels right up to Douche nozzle backwash? English can be an amazing language. Perhaps a Word A Day could be added here? Thanks for the language lesson. I am doing my best to find a take away on this post!
Cayman, get a 2008 Turbo with the Mezger motor and leave us 997.2 lovers alone!

Like some others, I'm breaking my own rule of not posting here.
Wayne, no offense intended, but why even entertain the guy's comments anymore? He isn't actually looking for a car... just look at the threads on other Porsche websites (where he has actually been banned) going back literally years.
I really think people should ignore the thread entirely. It comes up on my iphone app when checking rennlist and I need to keep scrolling past it, despite Cayman being on ignore for me. Is there a way to hide a thread entirely? With his posting on it, it has almost become a sticky at the top of this forum...

So sorry for imposing myself into this intricate conversation - but I have a quick question about terminology. Specifically, I'm wondering if "douchenozzle" is the appropriate term for this thread's reluctant capitalist. My suspicion is that he might actually be a moose knuckle (which, for the uninitiated, is an industrial-strength camel toe).
I admit to significant difficulty interpreting Mr. Powahh's double-negative-strewn Engrish, so it's entirely possible that you are all correct and I have misread the situation.
Carry on.

This being a German car thread I believe it would be "duschedüse" which when articulated out loud is even more appropriate.
