It was a tradition when Porsche made very few cars. Now, with everything from an SUV to a sedan--many have no idea about the tradition with Porsche. Ditto for the newest Carreras and Caymans/Boxsters. The problem I think is that there are just so many of these cars out there today, and many buyers today have no clue about the tradition.

I usually flash but many have no idea what I'm up to.

Older Porsche owners always wave, 50/50 with 997 owners, some wave back as a response with no facial expression. Never any responses from Cayenne and Panerama owners.

I always wave, never flash, but not at the ladies, cause it's just a car thing for me, not a pick up thing. I am water cooled, and I salute water and air cooled equally even if their car needs a good washing, return salute about 20%. More commonly from the sports cars than the SUVs or Sedans. More commonly from air cooled and cabs.

When I lived in Glendale, Porsche owners waved back. Now in Scottsdale, and nobody notices. /Sigh

Most would think you're warning of an impending speed trap.

For those who don't get a wave back from a Cayenne, bolster or Cayman here is my story. There is a 964 and a 997.1 that I see several times a month. Both of them wave back to me when I am either in the 3.2 or the 997.2. They almost never wave back when I initiate the wave sitting tall in the Cayenne. Now what do you say for that ???

Having grown up in a rural area, you always waved to those you passed. Now living near an urban center, I wave at other Porsches and often get a wave back.
I think the response you get depends on why the other individual owns a Porsche.

I find the "brotherhood" is much stronger amongst the older / classic model owners. We are always giving each other thumbs up. Most new generation owners don't care or respond, the few times it did it, so I don't do it to them.

I wave. 911 drivers ( 911,964,993,996,997 ) almost always wave back or flash. Boxster/Cayman drivers generally wave or flash. I have given up with the four door models. Rarely do I get a wave from a Cayenne or Panamera.

Porsche is still new to me... as a former m3 guy... we don't wave or flash our lights. I'll have to flash my low beams next time. Tried waving a few times but very few responded around here so I stopped... especially ackward when the wife is in the passager seat and they don't respond.

There are so few P-cars around here, that I rarely see one to wave to! But, when I do see one, I generally wave or give a quick flash of the lights.
