Why bother unless you plan on displaying it at Coffee and Cars or the gas station? I dont think anyone will ever notice or even care.

I can just see this at the next car show.
All the cars with their hoods up and a few random 911s with their fuel doors open. LOL

I'll admit that it looks kind of nice, but $160 for this to just catch a glimpse of every once in awhile. Just seems like a total waste of money.

Funniest thing is that Porsche makes no qualms stating that the the bits are "SIMULATED" Aluminum. And for the price they charge for these options it's downright "CHICKEN-****", whoops did I curse(?), that they can't make the entire part out of aluminum. I mean really $160 for a gas cap and its only plated aluminum? Don't that make anybody else besides me want to say WTF?

Porsche is my car brand of choice and I absolutely love the marque. But sometimes I really question how they do business. Guess they aren't the most profitable car company in the world for no reason at all. But I can really see why when they charge $160 for a part that takes $8.77 to make.

When I was configuring a 2010 Turbo with Sascha back in 2009 I ended up checking most of the Aluminum interior bits and then seeing the bottom line on the price of the car. Sascha pointed out that the options weren't "ALL THE WAY ALUMINUM" I about flipped out when I found that out. And for a prestige brand too, don't make much sense to me.

I really went overboard on the leather too when I configured it. Without deviated stitching and all performance options, sans PCCB, the price was $172K. And that was with keeping the aluminum parts.

So when I finally get my 991 TT I will forgo as many parts from the factory as possible and source them in the good ole U S of A. Talking most of the Aluminum bling and have some leather bits installed in Germany that would be difficult to do aftermarket here........

To each his own, I suppose. I'm sure there's a long list of options and mods that some will question, regarding value or aesthetics. Variety is the spice of life. OK - no more cliches for this post...

I see it as a nice piece of jewelry that I can enjoy at each fill-up.

Also - keep in mind that this is one mod that can easily migrate from car-to-car for those that upgrade regularly.

Well, think of it this way. If you drive the car 100,000 miles and you pay $4/gallon for gas and get 20mpg, then having this "bling" gas cap is the equivalent of paying an extra 7/8th cents per gallon over the life of the car.

Why would one think a gas cap is the same as the gas filler door?

$160 is expensive for a $10 item.. but when only 10 folks buy one, they are expensive. Making the molds for injected plastic production is very expensive. If you cannot sell millions of the part but only sell hundreds... well, you can do the math.
