i like the real aluminum ones being sold in the link above but i'd be worried about stupid gas station attendants banging the cap against the exterior paint, given most gas stations in NY/NJ are full service. actually i don't think i've even SEEN my gas cap in over a year!

It would be more appropriate for them to say "Benzin".. but that would just confuse the folks in states where they are not allowed to pump their own gas.

So I guess leaving one of those at the gas station would really irritate you.

No problem. I may get the gunmetal one for my Meteor Gray C4S however I am afraid that without a locking gas door somebody may pry it open to procure (i.e. steal) it while I am parked somewhere.

Can that aftermarket cap be used with the OEM leash?

Rob,

When you lock the car, the gas cap also locks.

You are so right about gas station attendants. Just filled up with Shell V and the attendent takes the gas cap and bangs it against the fender.

When I was ordering my car, the SA recommended it and thought it looked real cool. I agreed but said it was too much. He surprised me with the aluminum (look) gas cap and clear side markers for N/C when I picked up my car. I have to admit that I like it and think it was an appropriate, much appreciated gift from my dealer.

I, too, believe this to be a very fine product. Someone was wise to produce something for a Porsche, of a very high fit and finish, and price it well below Porsche's 'reasonable facsimile.'

I don't know why people say this. I have one - got it on sale from Suncoast ($99'ish IIRC), and it is metal - not sure what kind of metal, but the silver part of it is metal - the part that screws into the car is plastic and capped by the metal outer cover secured with real metal screws - I tried to remove them with a wrench and they wouldn't budge but certainly aren't plastic.

It's no big deal, but it bugs me just a touch to see an authoritative post that is simply incorrect.

If the screws would not budge., they may not be real screws. The whole outer surface could well be metal that is plated onto the plastic body of the gas-cap. So its formed plastic to look like screws in a cap, and then plated to look authentic.

But in a world where they make the GT2 RS with a decal of the emblem on a carbon fiber hood, because the aluminum hood with metal and resin emblem just adds weight, I don't see the factory supplying a metal gas cap that they feel is like an anvil dragging down the performance of the car.
