Why the sarcasm? Trying to create discontent so Porsche DOES something about it.

Here's the expert opinion on spare tires at Exce11ence mag. No date and issue number could be found.

Thanks! For some reason my car is more likely to get a flat caused by a large bolt through the sidewall or a cut, i.e., something that the sealer goop cannot fix than a little nail. Flatbed required every time dammit.

The treads are thick & well reinforced. The sidewalls are the Achilles heel.

Great article though - the thought of selling my car certainly crossed my mind. This article really sums up this issues. I am still unable to find that rear seat part in any of the PETs.

The article doesn't present any new ideas than have been discussed ad nauseum within Rennlist since 2005. If you remain paranoid that you will have a flat every time you take the car out you will go nuts.

OTOH, What's interesting is it documents what the experienced Exce11ence writers said about it for the amateurs among us who are speculating.

Also, it's not about paranoia except for the mentally ill. Who here is paranoid, really? Are the 'be prepared' Boy Scouts paranoid? Special Forces in the military preparing for likely trouble, paranoid?

The paranoia is from being unprepared, not from having a flat - any car can have a flat. What happens next, if you don't significantly bolster the "factory" solution, can be pretty inconvenient and troublesome - depending on how you use your car. Plenty reason to be paranoid and the furthur from a PCNA dealer, the more you should be. In fact I don't think it is paranoia; just facing reality.

And while it may have been discussed many times, when I started searching about, doing my research, I found it difficult to know which parts to order, which solution was best, which spares worked best - fit best - stored most easily, etc. And still, there are missing pieces of the puzzle - seat mount as an example - cars in other countries with factory spare as another example.

And for PCNA support on the problem, Suncoast is the only dealer I have seen step up to help put together a kit and even they have not been able to find all the right (secret) parts.

I have been looking through 2005-2008 PET, ROW, USA, Canada, and there are parts with no pictures listed - no diagrams - really hard to know what makes up a complete solution. Although, those year model cars do show the jack, the foam insert, and other tools as "accessories".

Just a PITA, that's all.

That makes me effen mad. Part of a "coverup" so to speak. Porsche trying furtively to discourage guys from getting what THEY want.

Think of it. "Backwoods Porsche Dealer Parts Department" tells a hapless caller there is no spare for the 997 (they all have 996 part numbers!).

Caller says "Thank you," hangs up and it's over.

OOPS! This DOES sound paranoid. But you know what? I bet there's more than a little bit of truth behind it.

The PCA article suggests there is NO temporary wheel option that would fit a '07 997S due to the larger calipers. Is that correct?

I've carried around a spare for 5 years now and knock on wood haven't had a single flat!

No problem (see attached pic).

Especially if you decide cut thru the sidewall and throw out the rubber.

How about saying it like this:

"Can I run the video camera as you attempt to cut off the old tire by slicing thru the thin, not-wire-reinforced sidewall?"

I thought we settled that in the other thread.

Conclusion is at this point nobody knows if it can be done reasonable amount of effort but several of us think it will be easy. There's no steel in sidewalls.

Just a matter of time before somebody tries it and reports back. Either way, no big deal.
