Default Porsche, "Roots in racing. Not posing."

Porsche officially turned down the Mini challenge. I like the way Porsche addressed it.

Dear Jim,

Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60 years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes.

But as you also know, Porsche doesn't race for fame, stunts or publicity. We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road. If you
need a reminder of our intent, please take a look at this short video:

<video link>

While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.

Good luck with your race at Road Atlanta on June 21; we hope you enjoy the day.

Sincerely,
Detlev Von Platen
President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America
I also like the message at the end of its video -- Porsche, "Roots in racing. Not posing."

Cheers,

It was clearly an advertising/marketing campaign by Mini/BMW for some exposure and sales. Actually kind of clever; "the little guy who at least tried" sort of thing.

Of course, Porsche had nothing to gain by taking the bait. But now Mini/BMW will go with a new ad campaign exploiting the fact that the big dog Porsche was "afraid" to take them on. Nothing to lose for Mini/BMW.

PCNA's response was classy. PAG has all along been in racing. Mini should join them, not just challenge them on their terms.

Porsche was too snooty to play along.

Cool response! I love the video too, one of the best..

I just hope it was the case for the Porsche buyers of the last 5 years or so... although I think it's going back to "Racing not Posing" with the new Economy... I suspect more car lovers will be buying 911s in the next few years than back in 2005/2006.

Posers can do away with other options out there!

If this is real then it was a classy move indeed by PCNA. @YA911Fan, What crowd pleasing PR is there to get from this?

Reminds me of the Ford Fiesta video that's pitted against a Gallardo to prove turning radius... http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/fie...eriencefiesta/

Exactly. If mini wans to race - 24 hour of Le Mans is where they should go.

I'm assuming what he meant was that the since the whole thing was a tongue-in-cheek marketing PR thing by Mini, then why not have PCNA come up with an equally tongue-in-check creative and fun response. Instead they sounded a bit too serious and "snooty" about it all.

imho, it would have been fun to see both of them bounce it off each other in a "crowd pleasing" way; i.e., see who can outdo each other in the cleverness department instead of the racetrack.

PCNA does not need to do that, that is why. If Mini is honest they can open the contest to 911 owners and have a 10-lap race on the track at Road Atlanta - not the paddock. But they know they would be embarrassed. The stunt they tried to pull was a tight autox on the paddock, and on that the Mini would win, heck an old Miata would win too. Horses for courses.
