Default Man, what happened to "paint to sample" prices? Waay high...

I have been absent from the Board, on and off, for the last couple of years as I've been driving my 360 and loving it.

Upon visiting the Porsche site and building my own car with custom paint, I noticed it is $5k now. Wholly cow. I remember when it was $3k, and I thought that was a lot. What happened?

Will be selling the 360 soon and re-entering the Porsche fold for no other reason than something new, and something different. Highly recommend the journey, though.

Most others don't even offer it.

My comment was more along the lines of why such a jump, when did it happen, and was there a bulletin on it. I'm referring to Porsche raising the price from what it was.

D A A A A A N N N N!

How are you?! I'm plan to build using your color code. I still have all your pics etc. I did a Euro Delivery with a BMW 7 Series in Munich in Sep. Man was it incredible driving around Europe and enjoying the Autobahn. BMW really has the ED down to a science. I am sad to hear Porsche has stopped this service. Do you still have the link or PDF of the article with your car in it? Love to see it again.

You are right, many don't offer color selection. I was just stunned by the sudden and significant mark-up on something I want. Do you know when it happened, and when?

From 2004 - 2009 the price remained at $4,315

For MY10 the price increased to $5,500

The cut-off date for MY10 PTS has passed (backed up from Feb)

There are always 4 basic colors - W, B, R, Y - in the base price and a palette of metallic colors to choose from for less than $1k.

The Euro to US dollar is the biggest cost driver. Still, what a great option to have, being able to pick your own color!

Currency! I can't believe I missed that one. 1.5 is a killer.

The way I look at it, it's one of the few things left that allows us to truly individualize a Porsche. I suspect the markup is due to two things:

(1) Exchange rate with the Euro. (We're lucky to get a break!)

(2) The delta in opportunity costs by shutting down and configuring for P.T.S. cars in the paint shop.

Thanks to our well-hung Dave for this scan: http://coochas.com/porsche/Resources...roDelivery.pdf

Besides what has been mentioned...the way I look at it is that the typical person buying a P car that is going to have a custom paint is not going to be the bottom end buyer but a top end buyer who will be spending over 125k+ . Their economist probably knows that if you are willing to spend that kind of money, 4 vs 5 vs 6k for a custom paint is not a big deal....so they stick you with the higher paint job.

It doesn't matter how much money I make. Having been raised in a housing project in LA, I suffer guilt everytime I buy something expensive for myself. I don't know why, but I can't pay for anything material without questioning its value, and/or negotiating.

If you're going to pay for a custom color, you better make it unique and enjoy it. I'll pay it, but not without pulling out some hair over it. Hmm,..what could I get for $5k if I went with yellow? A vacation for the family, a watch for the wife?! This is how my brain works--opportunity cost! Maybe if I just started drinking. How much is a mixed drink these days? What could I get with the money I've saved not drinking. I know, my custom color. Problem solved.

SilverSteel just do it! Once you go PTS you'll never go back.
I paid I'd guess a $4k premium for my car (I bought used so it's a guess) but I have never for one moment questioned the premium, not once.
