Thanks.
The resemblance is not just coincidental. Though I don't have a full beard I do have a goatee with about as much grey in it as in the pic. Many people tell me I remind them of him in many ways, including politically, philosophically, similar sense of humor...
Figure it'll serve the purpose of letting others know where I'm coming from with my comments and remarks. Seems lately I've been misconstrued. Hopefully this will help avert any more fallouts in the 997 forum of which I may have been a party to in some form or other. We'll see how it holds up over time.

I think the profitability of the 996 relates back to Porsche's profitability/volume/margin problems of the 964 era. Those cars (and the 993) were extremely complex to build, resulting in sales prices that limited the market, tho still leaving little profit Look back at the prices of a 964 Cab for illustration. I think mine listed for something like $75,000 in 1990.
The Boxster and 996 were designed to have lots of interchangeable parts (something like 90 per cent in front of the dash), so the price mark-up on the 996 went right to bottom line profit. Engineering/design was intended to simplify construction, which is also a good quality measure.
The Cayanne is amazingly profitable, built in Brataslava for $26,000 on average, and shipped to Germany where the wheels are slapped on. I think the labor costs in Brataslava are less than a third of Germany.
None of this is a slam. It is the obligation of management to reduce costs. Porsche has done a great job and preserved the brand. GM failed at the same goal when they used the same platform for every car in the line-up. AS
