Default Leather to Sample Questions

Will someone please describe a leather to sample interior for me. If I order red leather, what color will the door panels, dash board, carpet, ect be? Will the entire interior be red or just the leather pieces? What about the headliner will it be black or red? Thanks for the help. I think I'm going for leather to sample.

Here's what the order guide shows for (a) Black / terracota full leather [this should give you an idea what is covered], and (b) leather to sample. Note the 3-6 month delay for leather to sample, and other requirements.

What color are you thinking about? Be careful you don't end up with something you tire of after a while, or which makes the car impossible to sell in the future!

Not a bright red like Cancan. What red was on the old 356 Porsches?

Lori, it was just called "red". I have seen some striking red leather interiors in fully restored 356s & they are indeed beautiful. A 356 restoration shop can point you to sources for a swatch or color code for "356 Red" interior. I'd suggest Jon Paterek (NJ) or John Willhoit (CA). Have fun specing your car!

Thanks ked. Do you think Porsche would have it in a book somewhere. The one thing I wonder about is if the leather started life brighter and then aged. if so then I prefer the aged color. It's subtle and classy yet sporty.

Porsche does have a red leather called "Lipstick" Red, sorta like the old MB red leather.

Headliner will be Black Altancara unless headliner in leather is specified.

Porsche is an all ala carte car, too bad the exclusive program is for the most part is non-exhistant in the USA (thanks PCNA)

Lori, Porsche's special wishes / restoration shop / museum archives in Stuttgart might have historical charts, dyes or access to that via their suppliers (Reutter / Recaro). I doubt the normal channels (via PCNA) would get you access to that. It shouldn't suprise anyone that private US specialists are the world's leaders in 356 expertise (though the best private shops in Europe are just as capable - it's just we have more cars, thus more biz here). I am aware that the museum has even selected cars that have been restored by individual hobbiests - makes me proud to be American!

I have seen a variety of shades of red on these old cars - some are "original w/ 45 yrs patina" (rare), some are very bright & fresh, some more muted, some are more burgandy than red. Keep in mind that owners might have selected a shade based solely on personal taste. I would suggest that new "lipstick red" is close to the shades that are found on many restored 356s. If I were you, I'd check that out on a car similar to what you want to order, see if it is desirable to you, & adjust from there if you aren't satisfied (be sure to view it in direct, bright outdoor sunlight as well as other conditions).

Lori,

Porsche had a lipstick red (not too extreme but nice) back around 1987 as I recall. A friend had it in his 930 and it was really nice. When you go to full leather, pretty much everything is covered with it. They are doing some other stuff these days with fake stuff like on the console, but it will be painted/stained to match the rest of the real leather. Take a look at the various leather extra options to get a feel for where the leather will not appear. Another thing to consider is the adaptive sport seats,--even if you order the full leather interior, you still get the plastic backs. You have to shell out another $1600 roughly to get the backs of those seats done properly in leather. By the time all is said and done, you will have shelled out close to $5k for a cockpit of mostly leather. But--it's all worth it!
