Oil consumption
I'm coming up on 6K miles on my 997S. So far, I've had to add 3+ quarts of oil. The dealer says this is normal; using a quart every 1500 miles or so up to maybe 10K miles. Anyone else using at this rate?

My '03 C4S still uses a qt every 1000-1500 mi like clockwork. It may be common, but it ain't normal. If it continues be sure and have your dealer note it in your svc record.
They told me the same **** about 10k, well I'm at 35k now and it's actrually gotten a little worse. No smoke, never a drop on the floor, perfect compression test, WTF is the oil going.

I still haven't added a drop of oil in the first 5500 miles. I redline the car every day and have driven it in stop and go traffic in near 100 degree midwest temperatures this summer.
My question is the opposite: why no oil consumption?
Makes me nervous.

I'm at 1700 miles. Running her "well". I'm down about two bars.

All of the oil burning 996's and 997's I have come across are those that are babied and follow the Porsche "HINT" of breakin. When are people going to wake up and breakin their cars correctly and to drive the cars to the rev limiter every now and then. Keep using the 0w40 in hot climates and you'll be burning more oil after 50,000 miles when the bearings are no longer within tolerances.

Chris: I'm not saying that driving it hard is the cure all for burning oil, but it helps reduce or eliminate burning caused by rings that are not tight against the cylinder wall. However, for cars that are not broken in as I have advocated on this forum, but follow an "old lady" driving pattern, the potential for burning oil caused by rings/cylinders is greatly increased. Sometime, this can be corrected by driving the car to redline and coasting down to a slower speed while still in gear. Doing this frequently will most often start showing a reduction in the amount of oil passing the rings as the high heat and compression is helping the rings re-hone the cylinder walls.
Like anything else, there is never one answer for all circumstances..
