I directed this to 1999Porsche911 several days ago. Still, no reply citing his background in this field.

Any recommendation I may have given regarding using a 15w50 wt. M1 oil was not for a 996/997 engine. And I will restate to you that 15w50 M1 was not and is not available as a factory fill for the 996. What I stated was that it MAY have been M1 5w50.

Additionally. Porsche documentation expressly warned against using any viscosity of oil less than 10W40 in any climate where average temperatures are above freezing in the early 996's.

I thought I would resuscitate an old thread and see if there is now a consensus on what's considered good, normal and excessive for these engines.
Since changing my oil (C2S, Mobil 1 0W-40) at 1900 miles I've done a little under a 1000 miles and added 0.3 litres of oil (1 litre is approximately 1 US quart) but not sure how much of this is catch-up as a result of being overly conservative during the oil change with the level as I didn't want to overfill. At worst this would be around 3000miles/litre so not too bad - I think I would classify this as normal for this engine but years of driving cars that rarely required any oil between changes still leaves me feeling a little dissatisfied.

I've put in a half a quart in 6000 miles. A lot of those miles have been long trips on the interstate. I do red line it every time I drive it to keep the Tip tranny trained and I drive it hard on mountain roads. The gauge always shows full.

Snarf - I'm getting around 4000 miles per litre with my C2S but this is more than any other Porsche I've had in the past. Seem to remember very rarely putting anything in between services

Snarf and IanC, I've just added 0.2 litre 1000miles after oil change at 6000miles (so 5000 miles per litre, C2S manual). Oil consumption seems to have decreased (improved!) since the oil change, but it may simply be due to bedding-in. I aim to have the oil level indicator one bar lower than 'full' when the engine is cold and on the level, but I find it's worth checking this 2 or 3 days in a row to be sure of the real level. It then usually shows 'full' when the engine is hot.

My oil consumption is holding at around 1 pint per thousand miles. The car has 15,500 miles(in 15 months) and was broken in in general conformance with the manual. Th engine has been regularly run into high rpm's and allowed to coast down in gear. The car has been driven vigorously, but carefully. It is used as a daily driver, with frequent short trips around town and heavy traffic highway. Used 2 quarts in the 2000 mile break-in and leveled out at half that consumption.

Have used 0W40, as recommended, but may switch to 10W50 on the next oil change. Under superhot conditions, the oil pressure stays just under 1.5 bars.

I have 4500 miles on my C2S. I have done a lot of spirited driving and a DE at Sebring. So far I am just 1 line down....no need to add oil yet. Car runs strong too.
