Default Spare tire

Haven't seen much lately re a spare tire solution for our 997's. Is the 996 spare retro-fit kit a viable option?
TIA

Do a Search on the 997 forum for this thread "Spare Tire for 997?" posted by gradyex. This is a very lengthy thread with all the part numbers, photos, etc. relative to the spare tire that can be used on the 997/997S.

Thanks. Great thread and pics. If I have interpreted that thread correctly, the 996 4S spare is used/fits the 997S; is that a correct interpretation? As I do not have an "S", would a 996 C2 spare fit a 997. Anyone tried it?

I have an 05 non S 997, and I purchased a 996 C2 spare which fits. I also bought a jack that was labeled for a 944, which works just fine. I was able to use bungee cords to secure the tire so it would not damage the hood. You really lose a lot of the trunk space, but for me that's not an issue. Look at Parts Heaven, or Los Angeles dismantlers.

My dealer(Porsche of Huntintington) states that a 996 4S spare will fit. It is presently on order. It will be necessary to cobble together some means of positive attachment to the trunk. For information, a good marine or sailboat supply, such as West Marine, can supply components to fabricate different types of shock cords, ratchet straps and stainless steel hardware. Be advised that a single shock cord is too flexible to hold the wheel in place over hard bumps.

Put on the 2002 C2 spare today, good fit. Also, it's not a bad fit in the front trunk. as long as you don't need-use the trunk. Any re's on how to "cobble" the shock cords together?
Thanks again
Jack

Just got the car 10 days ago, still waiting for spare. I will figure something out and post it. Don't know if the trunk was ever outfitted to attach a spare. If a new mounting point is needed, it would be preferable not to drill through something vital. Fastening to the plastic bulkheads will require reinforcement to prevent tear-out. Give me a couple weeks.

I am using rubber cargo straps. They seem to be stronger and less stretchy than shock cords. I got them at AutoZone. I have one on each side of the wheel.

You can try mine out if you want, I'm in Glen Head, pm me.
FWIW, the C4S spare IS smaller than a regular 996, it really collapses into a small package.
I recently had a blowout on the Grand Central, damn glad I had a spare, as the sidewall was trashed. I wouldn't own a car without a spare.

I would retain spare VERY securely so when you slam on brakes the thing doesn't hit the aluminum hood fro underneath. Also make sure it can't bounce upwards if something serious happens.

Use STRAPS not bungee cords. Get the straps ate REI.com they sell neat camping stuff and have nylon strapping and buckles etc.

Just my $.02

I don't wannt be a doomsayer. But if you slam on he brakes is there any chance that the tire can knock into the hood and create a nasty dent? We'd have to be engineers to find out really. Therefore I'd get rid of teh rubber, KEEP the hooks and put some straps in there. Here's a link.
