Default Street Racing - Need shifting advice

I need some advice on street racing. Suppose I am cruising along in 5th gear between 60 to 75 mph on the highway in my Carrera S, and an M3 comes along side and appears ready to race at any time. When I begin to race, should I shift down to 3rd and redline it, then to 4th and redline it, up to 5th if it ever goes that far? Or would it be to too late to shift down to 3rd? I want to know the best technique to win.

Downshift into 1st....that should solve a lot of things.

this has got to be a wind up.

if you need advice on such a basic question, best not race (especially on the street).

1st: If you do not know, the M3 will smoke you
2nd: Learn how to drive by going to a track oriented school
3rd: after you learn to drive you will not feel the need to prove anything at a place as worthless as the street(freeway).
It takes zero skill to just step on the throttle and pass a bunch of cars going down the freeway. You see 13 year old kids doing it in stolen cars on the news.
We had a great example of a dumbass doing the same thing last weekend. As he was going South on I5 at >95mph he moved into the thrid lane at the same time as another car. He ended up going South in the North bound lane on I5. = headon. Of cource the dick head ended up slightly hurt. Not the same for the North bound person.

I already have been to the track, I concentrated on handling the curves. I'm not aftraid to ask, seems like Porsche owners think you know it all. I'm not going to downshift too low at 70 mph and mess up my car, just wanted to know what lower gear to downshift to at that speed. Not going to take a 997 street car to the track every othe weekend and lower the value and basically abuse the hell out of it, rather have an older one to trash on the track and learn.

If you're "dying to street race," chances are really good that you will.
Just try not to kill anybody else while you're doing it.
If you don't know what gear to downshift into...aw, just sell your 997 and buy a WRX.

There's no clear answer to your question.

You simply have to just keep trying things. Never involve innocent bystanders. Only "compete" against other street racers. Encourage them to follow your example. Drive the car as hard as you can! Don't be afraid of the redline because the rev limiter will kick in.

Eventually either you will figure it out for yourself OR you can ask God and get your answer. Least preferable would be asking your cellmate.

Basically you need to simply remember where your gears 'end' - i.e. what is the maximum speed at the redline for each gear.
The 997S speed at redline (7200 rpm) by gear is:
1st 41 mph
2nd 69
3rd 100
4th 125
5th 148
6th 182
7th just kidding
So,...if you were cruising along at 70, dropping your car into second gear would put you just past redline - not the smartest move. Basically, you would blip your throttle up a bit and downshift to 3rd gear and go from there.
My feeling on running cars through the gears on public roads is you're better off not 'racing' someone but rather finding a piece of highway w/little to no traffic and go for your top end run - safer and more fun - the only thing you risk is your life, your car, and your license that way...and not other people.

Contests of speed on public roads = Dumb & Stupid

But, if you must be party to juvinile foolishness , the Large Dial in the center of your insterment cluster contains your answer.

The best technique to win is to not race on the street. Now you know.

Check your local laws before street racing. In Los Angeles, they confiscate your car, and you ain't gettin' it back either. It's sold at auction, with the proceeds going to the city coffers. Speed contest tickets carry stiff penalties, and will cause your insurance rates to skyrocket by thousands of dollars a year, if they don't cancel it first. I believe speed contest tickets stay on your driving record seven years.

Alternatives:

(1) Drag strip, and you even get a time slip to see how your driving is improving.
(2) Track Days
(3) Kart classes and racing (you really find out how hard it is to drive really fast at these events)
(4) Even impromptu "follow the leader" jaunts up *deserted* twisty canyon roads are preferable, as they won't attract as much attention, as speeds are lower.

street racing no good.
drive on track.
if you like curves, you should already know which gear is needed to do what. and every porsche is geared way too tall anyway.
drinving on track doesn't lower value of a car. hitting a wall does and hitting a person.. well...... i don't even want to venture to think about it.
