I'm not up to date and not sure about the midwest, but I think Porsche has somewhat intentionally held back on production to create a tight market (that is what my dealer told me a couple months ago). Without doubt, S's are very tough to find and I think a lot of incoming production is presold. The 997 should be more available but certainly no glut.
I'd check the available inventory in a fairly large radius around you and call around. If a dealer has the car you want on the lot, I'm willing to bet near the end of the month when you're ready to sign, when push comes to shove, you can get a little bigger discount. But probably not a huge discount. Some dealers discount more than others, but its all supply and demand in the final analysis. Don't forget to remind the dealer its also getting closer to the end of the 05 model year.

I searched for eight months and couldn't find anything better than a $1500 discount on an S. The trouble was that my local West Coast dealers would not negoicate (supply and demand constraints) and the cost to ship an East Coast car (more inventory) to me would net me to break even after transportation costs.
Net-net -> I ordered an S (2006 model) exactly the way I want it.
If anyone thinks that production will increase or demand will go down or that dealers will start wheeling in dealing on the 997S....uhhh give me some of what you are smoking

I just took a look at SoCal dealers as I do every couple months to see what's in inventory. I was amazed how little inventory there is - 997S's are almost nowhere to be found, and there are very few 997's out there. There are Carrera cabs around and a few Carrera S cabs, but I expect those were recent deliveries and probably selling out very quick. One large dealer had 46 cars in inventory - only one 160K Turbo Cab (996) and one 997 can - everything else was Boxster and Cayenne. So yes, I think the market is very tight and I don't think there are many discounts to be had.

I leased a 997 base with a sticker of $79K. The lease was written at $74.5.
I test drove the car on a Saturday at noon and returned 10 minutes before closing the same day, asked for $74.5 and told them I would buy it if they agreed....they offered $77.5, I said I would think about it over the weekend, but would decide on the spot if $74.5....and they agreed. This happened in Conn. in early Feb....things (inventory, demand, etc.) may have changed since then. Good luck.

I guess if a non-S is sitting in the lot and you showed up to buy it with cash on the spot, the intelligent thing for you to do would be firmly offer $2K less. The DECENT thing for the dealer to do would be to give it to you.
Deal is done: no more haggling about details (e.g. don't ask or expect for any freebies) just take the car and drive away with a smile on your face. Think of the TIME you saved yourself and everybody else!
Makes sense, I think.

I spent quite a while searching for an S, and I agree with the comment that Porsche has gotten a lot smarter about the supply / demand equation than it did with the 996's. It has significantly curtailed C2S production, to the point where even cars with 3K - 5K miles are being sold with $4 - $5K off only. Newer cars are being sold with $1K - $3K off only.
The comment about production already being pre-sold is also on the money. Even the introduction of the cabs hasn't helped much.
I predict the market will remain fairly tight till next summer, when the TT comes out. Until then, good luck finding a good car at a discount. The guys that actually got the best deals were the ones that bought new cars off of dealer lots in the heart of winter. I was being offered a 300 mile, untitled, Launch Edition car for 90K from a midwest dealer. n hindsight, I am obviously disappointed for not taking it - especially since 3K LE cars were recently being offered to me for $94K - $95K.
I've decided to bide my time with a lovely Basalt Black / Black 996 C4S till the supply tide turns. -
