2011 Carrera Cabriolet or 2014 Boxster S?
I don’t know what to do. I have a 2011 Carrera Cabriolet with 46,000 miles. It’s Macadamia Metallic with PDK and Sport Chrono Package and a few other goodies. My wife has a 2014 Boxster S with 13,000 miles. It’s black with agate grey and amber orange interior. It also is a PDK with Sport Chrono Package. We have to get rid of one of them. I can’t decide what to do. Common sense says to keep the 911. But, the Boxster S has lower mileage and it can have all season tires. Yes, I know all seasons are not as good as summer, but we will be going from 4 cars to 2. So, she needs to be able to drive when it gets cool. We live in Chattanooga TN, so it’s not really ever snowy, just cool.
My questions about what one to keep center around long term reliability (911 has 30k more miles) and what one will hold its value better. They are both close in cost right now. Neither one costs more to maintain than the other one.
I think both are good choices. I don’t think I can go wrong with either one. Anyone care to weigh in?
I’m going to post this in both the 997 and the 981 forum….

The 911 is always the better "investment". But I owned both a 911 and the Boxster and I found the Boxster to be a better driver... more fun... better handling. Choose the funner car. If resale is important, keep the 911. If prestige is important to you, keep the 911 as Porsche owners who own 911s look down on the Boxster a bit.
Peace

Well if you are asking our opinion, I would sell both and buy a 997 w/Manual Transmission and decent color combo.

There isn't another car on the market with the driving dynamics of a 911 as it's the only offering with rear engine and RWD. If you love the way a 911 drives, then nothing can replace it. If you want easier to drive to achieve the same speed, then a mid engine Boxster or Cayman fits that bill. After owning a 911 for over a decade, I'll never be without one as my supercharged 997.1 6-speed is everything I want in an occasional use sports car - tons of power, precision handling, total driving engagemtn using both hands and both feet, unmatched road feel, perfect interior with a classic feel but more modern conveniences (AC that works, BT via the Dension kit), and fairly easy to work on. Once you get into the 9X1 generation, that fairly easy to work on thing goes away, at least in the 911 series as you can't even access the engine by opening the engine lid and there are way too many electronics and black boxes for long term reasonable diagnositcs and replacement without spending a fortune, not to mention their larger (longer & wider), not to mention the potential PDK issues
I'm an 997 manual guy with no desire for anything newer or different.
For a superb all-season tire on whichever you choose, the Continental DWS06+ is about the best out there.

I had a Boxster (986) prior to my 997s and I like the 911 more. More space (I felt cramped in the Boxster), and I don’t feel the 911 is any less good a handler in the corners either. You just gotta learn how to drive a 911 fast, and it’s a lot of fun. Also, it’s true that you don’t get as much respect when you’re in a Boxster. You are comparing a newer model Boxster to your older gen 997 though, so the Boxster may feel newer and more modern. Depends on what you enjoy driving more. I’ve come to really like the 911 design though, and wouldn’t personally move to a Boxster even it was new.

Cramped, small and nothing like a 911/997.
I refer the the Boxster as a "womens" car and rightly so.

Comparing a 981 with a 986 is, of course, pretty goofy.

I've had both all manual transmissions. 997.1 base Carrera Cab; 981.1 Boxster S; 981 Boxster S and currently 997.2 Carrera GTS Cab in that order. 981 is not "a women's car" the 981 S has plenty of power and excellent handling. Only 2 negatives about the 981 are: first generation electric steering very direct but little feedback and absolutely no space for anything in the cabin. Frankly you can't go wrong with either and solely a decision between you and the wife.
