Default Liquid leak under left side of the engine

Hi rennlisters,

Today, I enjoyed a quick weekend drive (20 mins) and then returned to the garage. After some time, I came back to the garage and saw a small puddle of liquid. The liquid is not water, it is thicker (not sure if oil or some hydraulic fluid). Top of the engine is dry.

Do you have an idea what that can be? Will take it to lift tomorrow, but I'm curios what to look for (usual suspects)

Thanks!

What's the color of the liquid?

Hard to tell - on fingers it is brownish and little thicker than water, but the color can be result of mixing with the dirt.

Also, the car is getting progressively harder to crank up - it used to take like 1 second and the car was roaring; the last 4 starts it took over 2 seconds and today it was seriously limping towards life - I had to give it a little gas, otherwise it would die. The fuel should be fine (but can try another brand), the battery is charged to the max => so I am kind of worried that there can be some sort of HPFP problem and the leaking + the hard cranking are somewhat interconnected.

Looks like a 997.2, yes? If it were a .1 I’d guess coolant and the water pump and coolant reservoir overflow is on the left. Not familiar with the .2 layout.

Wipe it up with a white paper towel so you can see the color.

It is this brownish color, but hard to tell for sure since it is mixed with dust. The liquid is not dripping, it is sort of "absorbed" into the surface of the lower engine parts - moisture on top of metal. From yesterday, the puddle haven't evaporated.

Yes, it is 997.2 The coolant level is ok.

Does it have a smell? Motor oil smells different from brake fluid which smells different from coolant, etc.

Not really. I can give it a ride to get it warm and that could give some hints.

Here is a component chart of 997.2 engine. Your leak seems to be between the thermostat (#26) and the hi-pressure pump (#1).

I've had something similar recently but it comes and goes so it's been hard to diagnose. Took it my indy who put it on a lift and they couldn't find any wet spots anywhere. I should add that my leak on the garage floor was much smaller than the one depicted by the OP.

I also had a small leak of pink fluid on the floor which also disappeared. The pink stuff is coolant according to the indy which may indicate my water pump is dying. Which makes sense since I'm at 71,200 miles on the clock. The water pump on my 2009 C4S died at 43K miles.

Update: I took it to the Porsche Center and the conclusion is that the liquid is a leaking from the HPFP. I am having the HPFP replaced as its life has apparently came to an end (the last crank took like 4 seconds).

That is sad. When car companies moved to adopt DI, they never knew the high pressure pump and the DI design were so troublesome. This cannot be cheap.

True but I guess such is life The est price for replacement is $1300 (material + work). Actually, I was pleasantly surprised hearing this as I was expecting $2000+.
