New to me 997.2 4S PDK. I previously had a 997.2 C2 manual and a 991.1 C2S manual. I liked the size of the 997 better than the 991 and wanted a wide body 4S and PDK this time around.
I didn’t want a low mileage garage queen but it needed to have a solid service history. So I began my search and set up all the usual search engines looking for white or black. Nice to have options would be the dynamic lights and heated/vented seats. I found a few here and there but didn’t have the preferred options or color. I found a clean white 4S in LA area but the PPI turned up some interesting finds. Decided to pass.
After a few months I got a hit on a 997.2 4S in basalt black in Colorado with 54k miles. I did the PPI but it showed a few minor things. Initially decided to pass but decided to make an offer to see if it was worth it. We agreed on a price and I flew into Colorado Springs and did the deal. Got lucky on the timing as a snow storm was chasing me out of town. I took the southern route back to Las Vegas and got clear skies the whole drive home.
The car was previously owned by 3 PCA members who serviced it religiously. I have all records from basically new. It received a new motor along the way for a rare tensioner failure that jammed in the oil pump. It has been around 13k miles and four years since so I felt pretty good about the work at this point. The only needed maintenance was spark plugs due to time and not mileage.
The car performed flawlessly on the 1k mile journey home. I'm really liking this so far! Can't wait to get more miles on it.
First order of business when I get home is to give it a good bath and clean off the stickers. I dig the stickers but they aren't my trophies. Maybe I can earn my own soon!
The intention of this thread is to document my ownership and DIY’ing my own service and repairs. Who doesn’t like a good journal?
The end links were not called out in the PPI but they seems a little loose. The OE maker for Porsche is Lemfoerder from what I understand. Fairly cheap to replace.
On the fronts I just replaced the end links. On the rears, I replaced the bushings too.
I wanted a little more sound without going loud. I ordered the Sharkwerks center muffler delete. The exhaust components were looking a little crusty with some surface corrosion. I found the most cost effective and functional way to resolve is ceramic coating. There is shop in town who will media blast and ceramic coat. It's made for high temperature exhaust components. He said this will hold up and not discolor either. I dropped off all the heat shields, brackets and clamps too. I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.
I am waiting a couple of replacement heat shields to install the mufflers and the rest. Also waiting on stainless nuts and bolts for the exhaust clamps. I went ahead and installed the manifolds with new hardware.
Congratulations and welcome back!! Between my wife and I we have a 996, 997 and 991 and I absolutely hear you on the difference between the 991 and 997. Although both are great I prefer the 997
First things first. One of the issues on the PPI was the window drop. It will drop when you pull the handle but returns up when the handle is released. I needed to get this done asap so I don't damage my window or trim.
After searching the Rennlist threads, I ordered a door lock mechanism and new bolts plus while I was at it, I ordered the handle switch too since the door card was off. Not much to show but it was a pretty straight forward fix and now works perfect.
I got the car on jack stands to check it over throughly. I did pay for a PPI but I always like to check things over myself to double check.
I am planning to knock out the spark plug service right away and anything else I see while I’m in there.
The rads needed cleaning out. I hooked up the garden hose to the hot water heater which help break up all the gunk. Not terrible but definitely past due cleaning. The a/c condensers look a little dinged up but no signs of leaking.
The outside temperature sensor was fluctuating a lot on the ride home so I swapped that out at the same time as cleaning out the radiators. Checked another thing off my list.
Thanks! I did a minor garage remodel this past year. I insulated it, added lots of outlets, and upgraded to jack shaft openers. The new mini-split has been awesome. Really made working in the garage in the winter enjoyable. It will be great for the Las Vegas summers too!
Removed the wheel liners and hosed out the under carriage really good. I wanted to clean out any built up debris so it doesn't turn into a problem later.
I got a chance to look over the struts as well. Everything looked in good shape. The rear two struts were replaced around 24k miles.
Replaced the motor mounts too as I could not find any record of them being done. It was time.
With everything stripped off the rear of the car, the spark plugs were easy.
