Pretty rare and low miles.

Can't compare BAT Auction prices to average market prices.
People pay premiums for cars on BAT. Why? Who the hell knows. --->I'd never buy 997 auction car. And never buy any 997 without seeing in person, Bore Scope Inspection and PPI from Porsche Specialist Indy.

I try and remind myself that if prices do drop, whatever I choose to replace the 911 will likely also have dropped in price.

i think he was getting at the FSI 4.0L rebuild, also at which point bore scoping would be pretty pointless

I'm talking about 997 in general - Not the 4.0 Build

Totally disagree with everything you wrote.
BaT, PCARMarket and the other minor auction sites are the ONLY transparent source of how much money actually trades hands with all the salient details of the car condition, maintenance history, prior ownership, paint meter readings, DME reports, cold start-up videos, driving videos, etc., etc.

Just what data do you have to refute auction documented prices?
I wouldn't buy a car without the info that is routinely provided on the auction sites.

I see lots of asking prices on line, but zero sale prices.
The auctions are the best thing to happen to Porsche pre-owned sales.

All we can do is guess and speculate. But agree or disagree, I think the prices Porsche dealerships are asking seem to be a fairly good indicator of what specific year models sell for. I say that since the dealerships tend to give up very little on their asking prices. For example, a dealership car with an asking price of $81,500 is unlikely to sell for less than $80,000 based on what I've seen and heard.

Getting this kind of guidance from a guy I know at a Porsche sales department while also realizing that all Porsche dealerships don't operate the same way.

Well, that makes sense. But dealers can sit on a car with an unrealistic asking price.
An auction is a real time valuation, unless RNM.

Ergo, auctions are the holy grail, IMO.
Historical sale price data and far more detail than any print/online ad or dealer salesman will usually provide.

A private party sale is getting more and more rare, but is potentially a source of a one-owner, well cared for, 10-17 year old 997 unicorn.

The comment section in the two major auctions, taken with a grain of NaCl , is also valuable. Prior owners or tire kickers often chime in with detailed info that is otherwise lost in the process.

I have had to pull teeth from a dealer to get maintenance history for a used car...privacy of former owner issues were cited.
What BS.

CarFax can info can also be valuable, if not always dependably accurate.
Far more reliable for what history it reveals than for what it might be missing.

True and I agree. Some dealerships think they have something really special and put a price tag on that car that as you say is unrealistic or sometimes worse than that. As that car sits, the dealer will eventually get the message and drop down to where that car gets some attention.

As for auctions, the reason I'm skeptic is that many buyers won't even consider auctions since they feel that they're basically gambling. And since so many buyers won't get near auctions for a variety of reasons, even if you get a final sales price, is it a good indication of the buyer's market as a whole or just the portion of the buyer's market that are willing to gamble in the auction market?

I'm not at all up to speed on auctions but I've seen posts indicating that at least some auction outlets don't allow PPI, offer little or no maint. history and you basically have to take their word for what they say about the car. And what if you buy an auction car sight unseen and when delivered, it's nothing even close to what was displayed and promised?
